Obituary of Laurie Jack Vassos
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laurie Jack (“Sweep”) Vassos at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on Sunday, December 4.
Laurie was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on February 9, 1953. He spent his early years in Melville before moving to Saskatoon. Laurie attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated from the College of Medicine in 1980. He practiced as a family physician in Saskatoon for 35 years.
Laurie loved travelling, skiing, the mountains, and spending quality time with his family. He enjoyed visiting museums and art galleries with his daughter and shared an interest in the medical profession with his son. Friends and family will fondly recall his sense of humour, a characteristic that remained with him until the end. He fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer, always setting goals for himself and planning celebrations with family. He possessed a remarkably positive attitude and never gave up hope.
Laurie was predeceased by his parents, Orpha and Hugh Vassos. He is survived by his wife Colleen, daughter Alyssa (Kevin), son Nicholas, brother Hugh (Bev) and nieces Nicole (Jaysen) and Zoe.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prostate Cancer Canada in Laurie’s memory.
We would like to thank the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, RUH Oncology Day Centre, RUH 6100, Palliative Home Care, SPH 4B, and the SPH Palliative Care Team for their excellent care over the last few months. Thank you to our family and friends for your love and support.
