Obituary of Neil Alexander McQueen
Neil passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 46 years, Heather. His daughters, Nancy (husband Greg), Andria and Jennifer (husband Jordan) and his two brothers, Rennie and Jim. Neil has four grandchildren, Taeler, Rylan, Chloe and Lachlann whom he loved dearly. Neil is predeceased by his daughter Allison and his parents, Jack and Anne.
Neil was an avid sportsman and traveled the world extensively for all of his sporting activities. He had a particular passion for Hockey. He played in the East-West All Star game in 1960 in the Kinsmen Peewee hockey league for the Blackhawks. He played throughout high school on the Walter Murray Juvenile and Midget teams and also coached the High School women’s hockey team where he met Heather. Neil received a full hockey scholarship to the University of Denver. He was a founding member of the Saskatoon Antiques hockey team and continued to play for 20+ years.
In addition to hockey, he was a member of the Nutana CC, where in 1969 he won the men’s bonspiel. Neil spent a great deal of time with his three daughters at the Saskatoon Figure Skating club, where he also served as president from 1987-1990. He was Chairman of the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 1991. Even though it wasn’t his game, Neil golfed every Friday with the boys and every Sunday with his mom and dad. He continued to golf with his mother after his dad passed. He was a long time member of the Riverside Golf and Country Club.
Neil worked throughout his life in the family crop hail insurance business and enjoyed travelling throughout western Canada. He met many friends along the way; if you became a friend of Neil’s you were a friend for life. For as long as we can remember, every Monday through Saturday, Neil went to Mulberry’s coffee row with his friends. He frequently travelled up north to Black Spruce Lodge, on the Foster River, to fish with his friends as well.
Neil will be remembered for always providing for his family and his deep love for his girls and grandchildren. Throughout his life he enjoyed family trips and spent the last several years travelling with them and to visit them whenever he could. Neil spent his life married to the love of his life, Heather, who he has been with since grade 10. As a 45th wedding anniversary present to Heather, he took the entire family on a wonderful trip to Mexico where they enjoyed a week full of sun and adventure.
