Obituary of Michael Wayne Leier

Michael Leier, aka Mikey, Mike L, Harry, Uncle Buck, Papa Mike, but most affectionately known as an amazing husband, Dad, papa, son, brother, and friend.  Mike was larger than life and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t try or do to have fun or extend a hand to help.

Mike was born in Kindersley, SK to Ray and Shirley Leier. He grew up in a family of 7 children, and is survived by his brothers Tim and Dan, and his sisters Cheryl, Lynn, Lorie, and Mel. The Leier family moved to Unity, SK where he spent his formative years playing hockey, baseball, and football. When Mike was in high school, the family moved to North Battleford, SK where he met many of his closest friends to this day. It was at this time the Leier family bought their cabin at Jackfish Lake, where they made many wonderful memories.

Mike and Jenni met at STI in Moose Jaw, SK in 1982 and were married February 16th, 1985.  Brooklyn and Boston arrived in 1991 and 1993.  Mike loved his family and would do absolutely anything for them.  He had a tender loving heart that was especially evident with Jenni, his children, and later his grandchildren. Mike and Jenni traveled far and wide to support their kids in whatever activity or event they were participating in.  Most recently Mike’s newest title as “Papa Mike” was one of his favorite rolls.  He absolutely adored Jack and Molly and was so excited for the upcoming arrival of Boston and Chantal’s baby in April 2024.

Although Mike’s formal education was as a Civil Engineering Tech, his life’s work would be in the grocery business.  When Mike and his business partners decided to sell their grocery stores, he realized he wasn’t ready for retirement. In 2021, Mike and his long time business partner ventured into the Cobs Bread business, purchasing both franchises in Saskatoon. As in all his relationships, he took great care of his employees, and they even referred to him as “king” and like a grandpa.

Mike had a big heart, and this was shown through the support of all his people. This spread far and wide, including all his nieces, nephews, and friend’s children as well. Their home was a gathering spot for his children’s friends, with Mike there to cook, entertain, and host Brooklyn and Boston’s many pool parties. Mike adored his children’s life partners, and they adored him.  Brad and Chantal are not just meant for Brooklyn and Boston, they were meant for Jenni and Mike’s beautiful loving family.

Mike had a large network of friends from his involvement as a player, coach, scout, and fan through the many sports he played and loved. His impact was not only in Saskatoon, but all throughout Saskatchewan and Canada. Mike and Jenni loved to travel to see their kids, new places, and most recently finding a love for Europe. When they were not traveling, they spent many weekends making memories at the family cottage. Mike was the captain of his pontoon boat and loved taking family and friends for a ride down the lake.

Mike and Jenni were each other’s soulmates, and they happily spent time alone together.  Mike was most always (haha) receptive to Jenni’s ideas, and most recently was enjoying Pilates and pickleball with Jenni.  They loved their life and all their adventures together.  He will be so missed by all who loved him, especially Jenni, Brooklyn, and Boston.

A celebration of Mike’s life will take place at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 9th, 2024 at St. Patrick Parish 3339 Centennial Drive, Saskatoon.
