Obituary of Angus David Addley

Our father, Angus David Addley, was born April 9, 1934 in Fielding, Saskatchewan. He and his three sisters lived on a nearby farm, close to Fielding, which dad’s father had homesteaded after returning from service in World War 1. Dad’s early memories of growing up on the farm were happy recollections of hockey, baseball, bike riding, and farm life. His childhood friend, Lionel Lambie, lived close by, and they remained friends until Dad’s passing.

Angus attended teacher’s college and next moved to Loon Lake to begin his teaching career in the mid-1950’s. It was in Loon Lake that Angus met the love of his life, Glenna Mae Conlin. Shortly before his passing, dad told me he knew the moment he met Glenna that he was in love with her and hoped she felt the same way too. Clearly she was and they were married in the Loon Lake Anglican church on August 17, 1955. They had been married for over 66 years at the time of Glenna’s passing in April of 2022. 

Their early years in Loon Lake were spent raising a family of four boys and a daughter. Angus was very proud of his children and their educational and career paths each had chosen. Angus was also proud of Glenna, who made a career in sales. Angus returned to the University of Saskatchewan in 1965 for two years of study, earning his Bachelor of Education. The family then returned to Loon Lake, where he became the principal of Ernie Studer School. He remained in this role until his retirement in 1985. During his many years as principal, Angus also served on the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation executive, and as the mayor of Loon Lake. He was also proud that the town acquired natural gas and rotary telephones during his time as mayor. 

In 1985, the family relocated to Saskatoon, but it soon became apparent that dad’s retirement was only temporary. He took on principal positions in Drake, North Battleford, and Pangman, leading each of these schools until a permanent principal could be identified for each. He often remarked on how enjoyable each of these opportunities was for him and how similar yet different each opportunity was compared with the others. In his final retirement, Angus kept busy by serving on the Saskatchewan highway traffic board for several years. 

Angus lived a full and happy life. When asked if he had any regrets, his answer was no. He was pleased to have raised a family and to have been married to his lifelong wife and love of his life, Glenna. 

Angus was predeceased by his sisters, Jean, Norma, and Moira; and his wife of 66 years, Glenna Addley. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Chez; and his brother-in-law, Grant. Angus leaves behind and is forever loved by his sons, Barry, Blayne, Graham and wife Karen, and Cameron and wife Kathy; and his daughter, Glenna Lynne. He is also survived and loved by numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved very much. 

A Celebration of Angus’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave. N. Saskatoon, SK). For those unable to attend the service, the family invites you to join the service via livestream.
