Obituary of Barry Wayne Kirk
It is with sadness that our family announces the passing of Barry Wayne Kirk on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 5:45 PM in the Royal University hospital with family by his side. Born on February 10, 1943 in Saskatoon City Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Nora and Andrew Kirk, in-laws Madge and Harvey McNaught, brother Hugh Kirk and his youngest son Stephen Kirk.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Merilyn D. Kirk, his two sons Bruce and Vern(Michelle). Grandchildren Stephenie, (Erik) Holmstrom, Joseph Kirk (Jenni LaBranche), Scott Kirk (Emily Fehr), Luc Kirk (Paige Mitchell), Michael Kirk and his great granddaughter Adelaide Holmstrom.
He began farming while in school with his dad and brother. His first job off-farm was loading trailers on rail cars for CP a natural behind the wheel. Soon after he rejoined the family farm full time in Colonsay partnering with Andrew and Hugh in the mixed farming operation. In the off season he drove highway tractor for various companies hauling short and long haul. As the farming operation continued Andrew retired and then Hugh at which time his middle son Vern joined him farming until his retirement in 2008.
As a Colonsay community member he coached hockey (Junior B), broomball and curling. He was a charter member of the Lions club, President two terms and commonly called upon to announce at the senior hockey games or special events.
His favorite activity was following his kids and grandchildren to their sporting events and cheering them with spirit. The miles he had to travel were never an issue as he bought a large SUV so he could transport players when necessary. A natural professional driver, accomplished farmer and life time friend to many he will be missed.
There will be a Celebration of his life at 1:30 pm Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Colonsay Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Barry Kirk be made to the Colonsay Cemetery, SPCA or Canadian Cancer Society.
