Bernice Rose Thiessen, aged 96 years, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 2023, at her home in Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon where she resided for the last 2 years. Bernice was born in Carmel, SK, to Theodore and Florence C. Schmitz. She grew up in Lake Lenore and later Saskatoon. She moved to Vancouver for work where she met and married Hans (John) Thiessen. After a few years they moved to Regina where they started a business and raised a family.
She was predeceased by husband John, friend Alex Boruch, daughter Carol Elliot (Sam), son Arnold Thiessen, and brothers Ted Arling (Kathy) and Jim Arling (Wendy). She is survived by sister Leona Stilling Redmond (Arnie/Jack), sons Alan Thiessen (Julie), Eugene Thiessen, John Thiessen (Heather), daughter-in-law Brenda Thiessen, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as several neices and nephews.
Bernice was a full-time homemaker, raising a daughter and four sons. After losing her husband, John, she took over his restaurant in Yorkton, then later trained and worked as a bartender and then in home care.
She was a lifelong knitter, loved mystery novels and was a formidable cribbage player and bowler. Retirement revolved around knitting for the hospitals, her care homes, and of course friends and family. Bernice was a very good cook and often shared her baking as well. She enjoyed being a member of the Red-Hat Society, travelling with her siblings and later joining the Century Club.
A Memorial Service will take place at the Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 - 4th Ave) on Thursday, April 20th,2023 at 2:00 pm, with interment to follow at the Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Regina, next to her husband John, on June 3, 2023.
