It is with great sadness that I read this announcement and out of great respect that I attempt a Tribute.
John and I go back a long ways. When Mary brought the little guy to Yorkton to meet the family her brother's towered over him. I think he took to me cuz I was the only relative the same size as him at 5 ft nothing both hands in the air.
The next thing I know is we're on the golf course together with him becoming my golf mentor. Just to indicate how far back we go Deer Park GC still had "sand greens". I think I was on my way to the PGA until the course put in grass greens. Ruined my ability to read greens.
Devin, Ricky, and Terri your dad's golfing curriculum that made you great players was developed with me as the student. To borrow a term from the Japanese who borrowed it from the Chinese I will call him "sensei" meaning Master teacher. A fitting title.
Of course John taught me the the mechanics of the game to go along with club selections and course management. Later he started getting philosophical about the game.
At this stage my tee shots had a huge left to right movement otherwise known as a slice. Finding my tee shot on a typical round in 3ft high grass John yells " Danny what are you hitting?" I yell back "3 wood going for the pin!" John shakes his head "use your pitching wedge" I say "but John a wedge won't get me there!" To which he says " Danny you made an error so pay the price". Not knowing what life lesson he was teaching I weakly respond "what club should I hit?"
He taught me the great game but more importantly he taught me to use the game to develop critical thinking in my life. I needed those lessons to stay alive so that I can post this tribute today.
I will await to tee it up again with you my sensei.
In closing " Hai Sensei" RIP
Danny
