Obituary of Ellen Margurite Manton

ELLEN (NEILSEN) MANTON

April 15, 1915 - July 4, 2022

Ellen was born on April 15, 1915, at Sec.20,Tp.32,Rge.12,W3rd near Donavon, SK.  She attended a country school.  In 1929, Ellen’s parents, Annie and John, decided to leave the farm and move the family to Saskatoon, SK., which was a good move for the whole family.  Ellen remained in Saskatoon and seen many changes in her 93 years of living there.

Ellen graduated from Mayfair Public School and the Saskatoon Technical School.  Her first full time employment was at the Bessborough Hotel when it opened in December of 1935.

Ellen met the love of her life, Art, at a Social gathering.  They were married in 1940 at St. Thomas Wesley United Church.  Ellen and Art had 29 happy years of marriage, but unfortunately Art was diagnosed with cancer and three months later died in 1969.  Ellen along with her son, Brian and daughter, Karen got themselves together and moved on.  Ellen expressed and said “Life does go on.”  When her children left home, she decided to look for part time employment to help fill the void.  She worked in Ladies Ready-to-Wear for fifteen years, retiring in 1987.

Ellen will be lovingly remembered by: her two children, Brian and Karen; seven grandchildren (2 boys and 5 girls); extended family; 13 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ellen and Art were members of Westminster and Grace-Westminster United Church and enjoyed volunteer work in the church and community.  They enjoyed together playing bridge, curling, five and ten pin bowling, square dancing and enjoyed activities with Brian and Karen.

For several years prior to Art’s death, they had season tickets for the Roughriders games in Regina.  After his death, she continued with curling for many years and lawn bowled for twenty years retiring in 2009.

Ellen moved into the McClure Place in April of 1989 and was one of the first residents to live there.  She lived happily and enjoyed her years she spent there.  Ellen served on the McClure Place Council and committees and became a Certified Leader for “In Motion”.  She retired from that position and continued to keep active in other areas.  She enjoyed singing with the McClure Place Choristers, playing bridge and nil, music, sports and reading.

There will be a private family memorial service held for Ellen.  In lieu of flowers a donation in Ellen’s memory can be sent to the McClure Place Foundation (1825 McKercher Dr., Saskatoon, SK. S7H 5N5).
