Obituary of Marlene Marie Matilda Stewart

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mama, Marlene Marie Matilda Stewart (nee Degelman) at the age of 76, on April 9, 2021 in Warman, SK.  Mom was born on November 25, 1944 in Lestock, SK; the second of six children to Herman & Mary Degelman.  She grew up in Raymore, SK, and in her married years lived in numerous towns and cities in Saskatchewan, and for a short time in Yellowknife, NWT. In 1985 she settled in Saskatoon, moving to long-term care in August 2020.

Mom had a sense of humor like no other, she always spoke her mind and you never knew what would come out of her mouth.  She would sing out loud whenever a song came to her mind, no matter the song, no matter the place.

She was our greatest cheerleader; she never missed a game that her kids played in; whether it be hockey, volleyball, baseball or track and field.  She proudly wore green to support the Riders.

She loved music! Every family gathering did not end until we brought out the instruments and had a jam session with everyone singing.  Even though her memory had failed in recent years, she never forgot lyrics. 

Our Mom was selfless.  She spent 20 years volunteering for the Saskatchewan Health Authority at City Hospital. In 2018 she was recognized for volunteering over 13,000 hours.  

Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2017.  Her mind and health declined rapidly.  As a result, she lived in two private care homes over the next 2 ½ years.  In August 2020, we made the difficult decision to place her in long-term care. She lived in the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home until her passing. 

Her greatest treasures were her family.  She loved showing everyone the pictures in her room of her kids, her grandchildren and her 2 precious great grandchildren.  To the staff of the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home, we sincerely thank you for the loving care you gave our Mom during the past 8 months when family visits were limited.  Mom was truly comforted many times by the staff who would come in to her room to check on her, give her a quick hug, pray with her, or simply because she wanted to show them pictures of her family, again.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kim (Shelley) Stewart, Laura (Shannon) Peterson, Darla (Dave) Hude and Lana (Wilmer) Fehr; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Trent) Rodriguez, Melissa (Chad) Bradley, Rachel (Skyler) Grogan, Jenna (Caleb) Bristow, Hannah and Seth Hude; two beautiful great grandchildren, Maverick and Avonlea Rodriguez; five siblings, Don Degelman, Diana McPherson, Jeannette Reeme, Howard Degelman and June Marshall; along with many other family members and friends who loved her dearly.

She was predeceased by her Dad, Herman in 1985; and her Mom, Mary in 2006.

Due to COVID-19, a private family service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at New Life Pentecostal Church, Saskatoon, SK with Pastor Tom Dehod officiating. A private burial will take place following the service at Warman Memorial Gardens with Rev. Thomas Dehod presiding.
