Stanford Orme Asher

1943  -  2020

On Sunday, Dec 6th, 2020, S. Orme Asher suffered a catastrophic heart event and passed-away in the loving embrace of his wife and children in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Orme is survived by his wife Shirley, their two children; son Andy and his wife Allison and their children Franklyn and Aubrey; daughter Kathleen Anne (Plum) and her husband Erick Raymond; as well as sister, Beverly Sullivan (Barry Timpany), and dearly loved nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law  and brothers-in-law.  He was predeceased by father, Ralph, mother, Vivian, and sister Ann (Bond).

Orme was born on July 16, 1943, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The larger community will remember Orme for a wide variety of accomplishments ranging from entrepreneurial ingenuity, community leadership, adventure-making, fostering strong bonds between family and friends, acts of generosity, and for his authentic, memorable personality.

He was a life-long entrepreneur and his life experiences culminated in what would be the crowning achievement of his professional life, S.O. Asher Consultants Ltd.

At 13 Orme delivered prescriptions by bicycle for a local druggist. As a young man, Orme worked as an insurance Adjuster for Asher Adjustment Services Ltd, Founded Northcote River Cruises, Westcan Travel Inc, Asher Real Estate Brokers, was Board Chair of Western Development Museum, proud member of Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon and Founder of S.O. Asher Consultants Ltd.

Orme pioneered the Hospital Home Lottery concept and incorporated S.O. Asher Consultants Ltd. to help charities raise funds through this exciting new creation.  Orme became the global leader in charitable gaming, running the largest and most successful events for charities in Canada, Australia, and USA.  Orme’s efforts have made an immense impact on health care charities and have resulted in well over $1 Billion in proceeds for charities to use to advance their worthy causes.

Orme was a waterman.   As a young man Orme taught friends to waterski at Emma Lake and spent time at Gimli Beach Manitoba.  Mid-life, Orme developed, captained, and managed the Northcote River Cruises on the South Saskatchewan River.   Later in life Orme and Shirley spent many wonderful days navigating the pacific North West waterways.  Orme was a car enthusiast and he enjoyed snowmobiling, travel, camping, the blackjack tables, shooting, backgammon and bridge with friends.   He was a people person to the core, Orme was a genuine, curious, engaging man.   He would connect with people of all walks of life and forge lifelong friendships wherever he went.

Above all though, Orme was a family man.    He and Shirley, his wife of 51 years were inseparable.  He would suggest that together with his darling, anything was possible.   Orme was a proud and loving father to his kids, a supportive father in law and a loyal and loving older brother to his sister Bev and her partner Barry.  He showered his grandchildren with attention and love and was a proud uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
