Obituary of Doreen Omit

Born in 1926 near Endeavour SK to Andrew and Rose Cerniuk, Doreen was the 5th of 16 children.  She grew up on a farm,  attended a rural school, and began working away from home by the age of 15. Doreen married Neil Omit in 1949 and they raised two children, residing over the years in SK, MB, AB, and  finally settling in Saskatoon in 1962.  Neil passed away in June 1992, and after his death Doreen continued to live in their home and maintain the rental suite in the basement.  She reluctantly downsized in 2018 and moved into an apartment, living independently until April 2020 when because of her swiftly declining health  it became necessary for the final move to a personal care home.

People, cooking and gardening were Doreen’s main passions, and she loved to feed friends and relatives at every opportunity.  Perogies, cabbage rolls, bread, buns and dill pickles were her specialties, and she also often enjoyed trying out a new recipe for any type of baking or dessert.  Many will readily testify that her delicious culinary offerings were immensely popular at potlucks and other gatherings.  The hospitality industry was the ideal setting to pursue both social and food interests,  so for many years she chose to work in restaurants and pubs.

Up until the last few months when she was unable to go out shopping any longer, Doreen loved to buy new outfits and shoes for every upcoming special occasion.  She was always smartly dressed, with her hair neatly coiffed in the same flattering style she had favored for decades – never a hair out of place.

Doreen will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, numerous other family members, and also by her friends.

Unfortunately there will be no service due to the current COVID pandemic.
