Obituary of Donald David West
With heavy hearts, we regret to announce the sudden passing of Donald David West on December 27, 2019.
Don was born in Saskatoon SK, to Gordon and Florence West on March 5, 1951. At age 5, Don emigrated to New Zealand with his family. He spent the next four years barefoot and carefree in Palmerston North and the Kaingaroa Forest. Some of his fondest childhood memories were his years spent in New Zealand. Upon returning to Canada, Don attended King George and then Bedford Road Collegiate (and the Riversdale Pool Hall) to round out his education.
On May 12, 1973, Don married his high school sweetheart Rose (Martens) West. Soon after they celebrated the arrival of their three children and enjoyed raising them and sharing his interests with them. Don’s passions included woodworking, fishing and outdoor culinary pursuits. He also very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and Forrester Road family. The West family has long been involved in Saskatoon’s Scottish society and Don was no exception. He enjoyed several years as a tenor/bass drummer in the Saskatoon Boys Pipe Band as well as taking on the roll of Drum Major and tenor drum instructor.
Don’s professional career spanned over 50 years, starting out as a sales representitive with a few different brokerage firms here in Saskatoon and later switched it up to work in manufacturing as a fabricator and production manager.
Don is survived by his wife Rose, children Cameron (Devan) West, Shari West (Lee Pepler), Kyla (Paul) Lucas and grandchildren Maia Pepler, Cohen West, Charlotte West and Caden Lucas. Don is also survived by his sister Linda (Cecil) Gibbs and brother Dayle (Stephanie) West and sister in law Terry Luce, brothers in law Bob (Pat) Martens and Len (Gwen) Martens along with many well loved nieces and nephews.
Don was a very kind and generous man. He always welcomed guests and new family members with a warm embrace and a cold beverage.
A Memorial Reception will be held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. at the W.A. Edwards Family Centre. Parking is available across the street at Saskatoon Funeral Home.
