Obituary of Jean Evelyn Mahoney
Passed away peacefully at age 93. Jean is pre-deceased by her parents, Thomas Mahoney and Mary Mahoney (Mason), brothers Jerry and Michael, and sisters Veronica (Galvin), Norma (Zakreski) and Florence (Leader). Jean was born in the summer of 1926 at Plenty, SK. She moved into Saskatoon to small house on Coy Avenue with her parents and siblings when she was a pre-teen. Jean attended grade school, high school and university in Saskatoon. The friendships she made in these early years carried through until her death at the Extendicare home this year. Jean pursued a career in nursing, eventually become director of nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. She left nursing to pursue a foray into owning and operating the Copper Kettle Restaurant in Belleville, ON with her cousin, Dawna Hogan. She never married and retired back to Saskatoon to care for her mother. Jean was the favourite aunt to a generation of nieces and nephews who were treated to birthday lunches and shopping expeditions. She is also remembered for her stellar fashion sense and stories from her world travels. Jean was a voracious reader, bridge player, knitter and crossword master, hobbies that she pursued into her 90s. She lived at Columbian Manor prior to moving into elevated care this past summer. Many thanks to the staff and residents at Columbian for making her final years a rich and rewarding experience. A Liturgy of the Word will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 2 at St. Francis Xavier (222 Willow Street).
