Obituary of Grace Ruby Winder

Grace Ruby Winder (1919 – 2017) The family of Grace Winder (nee Pilgrim) of Delisle, Sask. with sadness announce her passing May 21st at Porteous Lodge, Saskatoon, Sask. Grace has peacefully left this earthly world to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 97 years. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Iris and her husband Darcy Peakman; her son Ed (Deb) Winder; her two grandsons, Geoff (Miranda) Peakman and Tim Peakman and step grandson Shane (Kate) Danielson. Two great grandsons, Tyler Peakman, and Ethan Peakman, great granddaughter Trinity Peakman and step great granddaughter Ella Rae. She is also survived by two sisters, Esther Robinson and Frances Pilgrim (Don Waters), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Grace was predeceased by her husband Cliff on May 21st, 2000 and parents Willie and Annie Pilgrim, and infant sister and infant brother and a great granddaughter Desiree Peakman, sisters Viola Warren, Hazel Cuff, brother-in-laws; Al Warren, Harry Cuff, Victor Robinson, Bill Kearnan, Cyrus, Frank and John Winder and Jim Hill, Norman Holtby, sister-in-laws; Margaret Kearnan, Florence Hill, Belle, Lil, Ethel Winder and Eleanor Holtby. Grace was born in her parent’s farm home in the Avondale district on July 20, 1919. Grace received her education at Fairholm School, and transportation to the school was by horse and buggy in the Spring and Summer and cutter and sleighs in the Winter. Grace worked as a hired girl for Mrs. Andrew Doig, Mrs. Clarence Miller and Mrs. George Rutledge. Grace in her youth was a member of Avondale Baptist Church, attending Sunday school, church, young people’s groups and camps. Grace had a setback in her health in March of 1942, having rheumatic fever and had complete bed rest in her parents’ home for 4 months. She made a remarkable recovery from this and enjoyed good health, till getting osteoporosis and macular degeneration of the eye in her later years. She married Clifford Winder of the Creek field district (Laura) on October 30, 1943 in the Avondale Baptist Church and had almost 57 happy years together. They lived on a farm north of Laura for 8 years and then moved to Delisle November 1951, farming from there for many years. In 1955 they had a daughter Iris and in 1958 a son Ed. After Cliff passed away Grace continued to live in their home for 2 years and then she moved to Parkview Place in Delisle, then in 2010 due to her health she moved to a private care home in Saskatoon, and in 2015 she was residing at Porteous Lodge till her passing. Grace was always interested in and took part in community affairs. She was a member of Delisle United Church, teaching Sunday school there for many years, as well as serving on the church council and was an honorary member of the church. She also went to Outlook as a leader for 10 year old girls at a church camp. Grace was a life member of the (UCW) United Church Women belonging to it for 36 years. She also was a life time member of the Women’s Institute (formerly Homemakers Club), which she was a member for 46 years, as well as an Honorary Regent of the Delisle I.O.D.E. She enjoyed curling very much and was also a life member of the Delisle Curling Club. She enjoyed square dancing for 10 years, golfing, swimming, walking, handwork, and gardening especially flowers. Grace also liked reading and had many favorite poems, baking was her love and she enjoyed sharing it with others especially her buns, donuts and coconut macaroons.
