Erla McMurtry

Obituary of Erla Maxine McMurtry

Erla McMurtry (September 5th, 1925-August 25th, 2016). We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Erla McMurtry (Mom, Nana and Aunt Erla). Erla’s greatest joy was time spent with family, including her son Bruce (Renee) and her grandkids, Erinna and Ryan. Especially dear and close to her heart was her extended family of nieces and nephews along with their families and she loved the long visits shared with Doug Anderson (Sheryl) of Yorkton, Mary Ellen Watkins (Chuck) of Medicine Hat, and cousin Tim Evans (Avis) of Athabasca, AB. She enjoyed having company and made friends easily and she had many loving and caring lifelong companions including Edna, Brenda, Marj, Jane,Mary, Donna and Clara. Her impromptu meals and backyard gatherings were always lively and she relished the many happy hours spent socializing. Erla was born and raised in Saskatoon, and attended Wilson and City Park Schools and the Business College. She lived almost all of her 90 years in Saskatoon, owning and operating a neighborhood grocery store and working in office administration. Erla attended the Mount Royal Emmanuel United Church and volunteered her time in many different ways. She loved both playing and following curling, watching figure skating, listening to big band or country music and cheering on the Roughriders. She worked hard but also spent many hours shopping for bargains, knitting intricate and beautiful sweaters and adorable baby items, cooking meals for guests which always included several desserts, as well as tending to her large garden and many flowers. We will treasure the gifts that she shared with us; her generosity, her kindness and her positive outlook and demeanor. Erla lived a long and full life, predeceased by her beloved sisters Betty and Audrey, Special Auntie Dot, husband John and many friends.
