Sincere condolences to all who loved him. Inga and Les were great friends to my father and my family. Les and dad discussed many a project and philosophy over the years, conversations they both enjoyed greatly. The fine art of civil discourse. It’s the end of an era, one that will be read about for generations to come. Rest well.

Whether you agreed with him or not, you knew where he stood; that is not as common as it should be now. As a member of faculty and emeritus in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources and the Department of Soil Science stayed engaged with the long after retiring and would go out of his way to help students, staff, and colleagues. Les will be missed very much.

Les was our neighbour to the East of our farm. He gave us valuable information and input about various agricultural things when we were farming. We enjoyed meeting him on the road or chatting with him whenever we met. I'm sure "Dr. Soil", as we called him, will be missed by all. Sincere condolences to all his family.

A friend recommended I should contact Les when my elderly father, Adrian Paton, was working on publishing a book. Les gratefully shared his knowledge, and was able to put us in contact with an amazing editor. I spoke with him several times after the book was published, and he was always so enthusiastic and helpful. He had a personality that was larger than life. My condolences on your loss.

My condolences to Les’ family. Les had quite the presence. I worked for Les throughout the 80’s. I responded to a hand written advert for a technical position that looked like it had been written in crayon (desktops were not around yet). I wasn’t sure if it was a VocAg prank or not, but took the chance and met with Les. There was a good group of guys that worked for Les or were grad students at that time. Les was very demanding boss but once you proved yourself he let you loose to carry things out on your own. Les was very pragmatic, as was his research. He continued to keep in touch throughout the years and Xmas letters were looked forward to. I learned a lot during my time working for Les which was very beneficial in my career.

Les taught me my only soil science class I ever took. Brian and I have always had great respect for him as a person, teacher and one so willing to share of his knowledge and kindness. We remember him also sharing his garden knowledge and bounty with my mother in law. Our condolences as you learn to live without his physical presence.
