Words are in short supply, as no set of them can express the goodness of Eric Dayton's being among us. Eric thoughtfully and generously touched many lives, and we remember. That's the best I can do

Professor Dayton was a light in my life as a female student studying philosophy in the 80's. He was hilarious, positive, kind, generous and was always respectful and caring. He is the definition of a Mensch! The world lost someone so special. Sending healing thoughts to his family.

The evenings spent with the "Philosophy in the Community" community will always be remembered fondly for reasons other than intellectual stimulation. Eric was key in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Coffee and cookies were always welcome as was his energy, good nature, and sense of humour. We have lost some humanity in our world with his passing.
Eamer, please accept my condolences for you and your family.

Eric was a wonderful prof and I thoroughly enjoyed the classes I took with him in the mid-Seventies at the U of S, when he looked more or less as he does in the photo where he's holding one of his beautiful babies. I don't remember much about the philosophy we studied — at one point we were slogging through the dreck of that Nazi "shit from the heels up" Martin Heidegger, and rather than bluffing his way through it as a lot of academics would, Eric acknowledged he was just as at sea as the rest of us when it came to deciphering such gibberish as "das Nichts nichtet." But I remain eternally grateful for his nutritional advice (for example, that one will derive more benefit from eating a peanut butter sandwich with a glass of milk than by consuming them separately; I don't even know whether this is true, but I've been taking this as gospel for half a century now). I dug his humanism. I dug his frank atheism. I especially dug his sharp sense of humour and finely honed sense of the absurd. He was an inspiring guy, and to his family and close friends, I can only say that I'm very sorry for your loss. Eric inspired hundreds of students over the decades in ways he couldn't possibly have been aware of himself. He was a great teacher and a terrific philosopher. In my experience, that's a rare and precious combination. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of pragmatists sing thee to thy rest.

I am very sorry to hear of Eric's death. This is a message from Tom Peters who knew his whole family when he was born in Ithaca. The families had been friends since Berkeley days when my father was his TA in physics under Robert Oppenheimer, and Bruce a student. We moved to Rochester NY and Bruce, Carol, Derry to Ithaca where Eric was born, and we saw each other often. Eric's father Bruce followed my father, Bernard Peters in his career to Bombay and Copenhagen, and I knew Eric in Copenhagen and Switzerland too. Missed him in Bombay because I had left before he arrived. We had not been in contact for many decades, but I did not expect him to die so early as Bruce lived to be 101, but I don't know about his mother: I have/had no contact with Carol, but was closer to Betty, his step mother, whom we all loved. You all know the story with Carol, I do not need to rehash that.
Best regards, and my sincere condolences. I regret his death - Eric was a really good guy!

I was very fortunate in having Eric in a few of my drawing classes over the years. His drawing ability was exceptional and his conversation engaging. I invited him to do a talk on the aesthetics of beauty for Remai Modern in its very early days, and he did a wonderful job! He was simply a lovely human. Condolences to his family and those close to him. I know he will be missed.

Eric was a great scholar and a good friend. He was also a tireless advocate for the philosophy department and the very model of an engaged, dedicated, and fair-minded department head.
I’ll miss him deeply.

Eric was one of my favourite professors. My first class with him was a seminar on Kant in which he promised to take us from "darkness to murk" through the Critique of Pure Reason. He did much more than that. Eric served as a referee for my graduate school applications twenty years ago and supported my efforts to develop a Philosophy for Children program with the department ten years ago. He spent time with my ideas, and I cherished his comments and feedback immensely. I learned so much from Eric—not just about philosophers, but about life. He poured creativity and care into every endeavor. And he really did make the best cookies, etc. I will miss him.
