Obituary of Laura Evelyn Mooney
Laura Mooney died peacefully surrounded by family on April 14, 2024, at 101 years of age.
Laura is survived by her daughters, Marla Mooney (Wayne Howe) and Shannon Scheer (Dwight Scheer); her grandchildren, Jeremiah Kowalchuk (Jodie Hierlmeier), Sarah Kowalchuk (Ryan Norton), Daniel Mooney, and Erin Mooney; and her great grandchildren, Jack Norton and Piper Norton.
Laura was predeceased by her son, Gerry Mooney; by her siblings, Wilburt Anderson, Melvin Anderson, Ada Anderson, Dorothy Butler; and by her beloved husband of 55 years, Sam Mooney.
Laura was born on the family farm near Netherhill, Saskatchewan, on December 23, 1922, to Mary and George Anderson. She graduated from Normal School (Teachers College) in 1941 and taught for 10 years at several schools in southern Saskatchewan until starting a family in 1952. Laura returned to work as a sales associate at Mikado Silk in 1966 and worked there until her retirement in 1985.
Laura and Sam began an adventure in 1980, purchasing a lake lot at Echo Bay and building a cabin over the next few years. The cabin became a favorite place, where Sam and Laura enjoyed more than 20 years of fishing, swimming, birdwatching, cards, evenings by the fire, sunsets, and great meals with the family. The relationships they made with friends and neighbors at Echo Bay were cherished deeply.
Laura lived at The Franklin retirement home for 11 years, which was an anchor in her life, and became especially close to her dear friend, Stan. Laura was blessed at The Franklin with great neighbors, close friends, afternoons playing bridge, and many chats in the evening while enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of sherry. She made many friends at the Franklin, with both the residents and the staff, and spoke fondly of all.
In keeping with Laura’s wishes, the family will have a private memorial service at Echo Bay. In lieu of gifts or flowers, please feel free to make a donation to a charitable cause.
