Obituary of Ella Alvina Tabler

Ella Alvina Tabler went to her eternal home on February 24, 2024 at the age of 96 years. Ella was born May 28, 1927, on the farm near Young. In 1944, Ella Schatz married Karl Tabler and the couple rented farm land. In 1948, the family moved to Central Alberta. While Karl skidded logs, ran a planer, built houses and played ball, Ella worked alongside, made a home for them and their two sons, Gary and Chris. The family returned to Young in 1958 and purchased the Tabler farm. In 1960, Geraldine arrived. Still farming, dad took a job in Young but they soon moved to Outlook. Ella adjusted to the many locations they lived and made a lovely welcoming home. After they left the hard, laboured work of the farm, mom enjoyed her many gardens. She also volunteered for many organizations. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Saskatoon, they crafted many handmade articles, toys, and met more friends along the way. They enjoyed visiting with friends and loved to play cards. Into her 90’s, Ella could still play a skilled game of Canasta and wrote many short stories about her memories from the farm and childhood. Ella enjoyed a long and healthy lifetime. She broke her hip five years ago and was unfortunately confined to a wheelchair at that time.  

A funeral service will be held at The Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave N) for friends and family on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The lunch & gathering tba.

There is a plate with the quintuplets names on the rim that was advertised in the western producer in the early 1930s. I wanted to send 4 this plate so bad and carried the ad around with me, hoping there was a way that I would be able to get it. Those little girls were so special to me they were born on my birthdate, and as young girl, I was thrilled that such a thing could happen, and as it was, there had been a severe drought for what seemed forever to me and lo and behold. We had a little rain shower that morning. Another blessing the short wet grass felt so good on the air and was so fresh and clean. I had no idea where Ontario was and I didn’t care. I was happy it rained on the date the quintuplets were born and it was my birthday!  
When my grandparents moved off the farm into town, they were having an auction sale. My husband, Karl and I went to look at what was there for sale, well my heart skipped a beat, there was THE plate. I wanted it for so many years & to my delight, my husband bought it for me.  Many yrs later, we went to visit my brother-in-law in North Bay Ontario. The Quints were born near there, and the museum was close by. I was so excited and happy I was able to go to the museum. It was a great day for me.  Their birth home was the museum now & it had an all wood cook stove in it. The warming closets were open. This was where the babies were kept warm all those yrs ago. There were a lot of souvenir items on display, their baptismal & confirmation dresses, but I didn’t see a plate like mine.  Truly a treasure.
