Obituary of Byron Leonard McFarland

After a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, Byron Leonard McFarland, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on February 16th, 2024, in Saskatoon. Born in the same city on July 29, 1953, Byron's life was one filled with love for his family and an unwavering passion for music. 
 
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 37 years, Arlene (Friesen), as well as his children Jennifer (Ian) Hill, James (Leanne) McFarland, Kirsty (Julien) Faramin, and their mother Kim (Harold) Mackay-Lane. His legacy also lives on through his twelve cherished grandchildren: Rachelle (Eliot Kowalchuk) McKay, Kyle McKay, Cole McKay, Jordan (Camryn Beaumont) McKay, Jared McKay, Harper, Holden, Finley, Marlow, Grayson McFarland, Lennox and Kendyl Faramin. 
 
Byron's love for his family knew no bounds; he held them dearly in his heart every day. He found solace and joy in sharing moments with each of them and took pride in watching them grow into the remarkable individuals they are today. 

Proudly rooted in Saskatoon— his heritage and family history held significant meaning due to its rich history. The warmth of his childhood home at “936” (best view in the city) held countless memories shared by all of us.  

Byron’s enthusiastic sense of humor could light up any room; he would go beyond to bring comfort, smiles and laughter to those around him. We have spent many hours reminiscing about stories of friendships and the fun times he has shared with so many. Everyone was always welcome anytime for a visit and a friendly fire. 

Coming from a strong musical background influenced by his parents, music was not just a hobby but also a part of who he was. When he sat down at the organ, the melodies that flowed from him were full of emotion that touched the hearts and created many memories for those around him. It was a form of therapy and nostalgia for us to just sit and listen to him play.  

Byron and Arlene enjoyed travelling to many sunny resorts and destinations, however, the simplicity of Wakaw Lake held a very special place in Byron's heart. B-52 was most definitely his happy place where he found peace in a close nit community. They spent summers enjoying the lake life, a round of golf, Rider (Bomber) games and countless gatherings. 
 
Byron belonged and contributed to many bodies of the Masonic family which began in 1981. He was a proud member of Imperial Lodge #60 of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Saskatoon, WaWa Shrine, past president of the Saskatoon Shrine Club, a member of the Drums and Bugles, the Classic Car Unit and as well as a member of the Royal Order of Scotland. 

As an accomplished organist, Byron served many years as the Grand Organist for the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan. His musical signature was always appreciated by all who attended lodge meetings, Scottish Rite reunions, and will be sadly missed. 

His dedication and many contributions shone brightly through these affiliations. His commitment reflected not only loyalty but also compassion towards others—that resonated deeply with all who knew him.  

Byron had a natural way of connecting with people through light humor as well as engaging conversations. Once illness struck, the loss of his voice was devastating for him and one of the many challenges he would overcome. He managed to find new ways to express himself and continue to have meaningful impact on those around him. 

Predeceased by his parents Lucille and Reginald alongside stepmother Alice Turner McFarland—his absence is felt profoundly yet we find comfort knowing he has reunited once again among loved ones who have gone before us. 
 
Funeral service is entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home and will be on Saturday February 24, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Saskatoon Funeral Home. Donations can be made in Byron’s honor to the Wa Wa Shrine Patient Transportation Fund or the Saskatoon Cancer Centre —an act reflecting Byron’s enduring kindness toward helping others even beyond this lifetime. 

 
The family extends heartfelt gratitude towards the nursing team at St. Paul's Palliative Care Unit as well as the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, whose compassionate care provided comfort during difficult times—they will forever hold a special place within our hearts.  
 
May you rest peacefully now Dad— you have shown us what strength is - you will never be forgotten — for your memory shall live on eternally within each beat of our hearts until we meet again someday... to be continued
