Obituary of Phyllis Edith Somers
The passing of Phyllis E. Somers, age 101 years, of Saskatoon occurred at the Hospice at Glengarda on Friday February 2, 2024. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday May 3, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue North with Joan Brown as celebrant. Phyllis is survived by sons John (Heather) of Saskatoon and Ron (Janet) of Vernon, B.C., four grandchildren Robert, Donald, Tracey and Levon and one great- granddaughter Sabrina. She was predeceased by her parents Harry and Ethel and siblings Charles, Roma and Shirley, all of England, as well as her husband Donald of Saskatoon and husband Mike MacNab of Calgary. She was born on August 31, 1922 in Haywards Heath Sussex England where she received her education and lived till her early twenties. After the outbreak of World War II she enlisted with the Royal Air Force where she served with the WAAF Motor Transport Unit stationed at Biggin Hill Fighter Base. While there she met her husband Donald who was in England serving with the Canadian Forces, Regina Rifles, and who she married in February 1943. Following the war she, along with baby John, followed her husband back to Canada in 1946 where they took up residence in Saskatoon. Phyllis lived happily in Saskatoon until the passing of Donald in 1991. She later moved to Calgary where she married her second husband Mike. Following Mike's passing Phyllis returned to Saskatoon where she took up residence at Trinity Manor till her passing. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice at Glengarda. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Trinity Manor in addition to the staff at Royal University Hospital and the Hospice at Glengarda for their compassionate care. Pallbearers will be sons John and Ron, Grandsons Robert, Donald and Levon plus Robert Lytle. Following the Celebration of Life interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
