After meeting Pat at RUH, I was quite startled to hear on the news that Roy had died. My husband, Ron, remembers Roy from many farm meetings. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1
With sympathy, Ron and Lillian Heichman

Growing up in Alberta, I often heard my Dad (Glen Hart) talk of uncle Roy. He would read in the Star Phoenix of something he had done recently and he would chuckle "That sounds like Roy". It was not until we connected on email, that I got to know Roy. He always encouraged me to stand up for what is right, to think ahead, to protect our sovereignty and to monitor corporate greed. Dad taught me to be proud of our Hart/Atkinson heritage and I am glad he did. This country is built on the foundations carved by visionaries like Roy and Grandma Elsie (Atkinson) Hart. My condolences go out to the Atkinson family for our collective loss. Let us celebrate that the world is a better place, on the strength of his commitment to social justice and the protection of the family farm.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Roy Atkinson who passed away on May 17, 2016. Roy had presented Urban with the Charter as Founding President of NFU Local 102 on January 29, 1969 and Charter District Director of District 1, Region 1 (PEI) on February 18, 1970. Roy had a great love for Prince Edward Island, and he was arrested at Borden, PEI on August 21, 1971 and charged with conspiracy to block the highway. In mid-October 1971 the case was thrown out of court because NFU members made the decision to block the highway. In union is strength. Long-time Executive Secretary of the Saskatchewan Farmers Union and long-time Executive Secretary of the National Farmers Union, Stuart Thiesson and Urban visited Roy at the Luthern Tower in Saskatoon on November 29, 2014. He hosted us for supper at the 22nd floor restaurant.. Sincere sympathy to you all. Urban and Mary.
