Mary Peters, passed away peacefully on Friday December 8, 2023, at St. Paul’s hospital in Saskatoon, SK.
Mary was born on March 18, 1934, to Helena and Diedrich Hiebert in Great Deer, SK. She attended Walter Scott School for grades 1 to 8 in the one room schoolhouse.
She helped on the family farm along with her siblings, and especially so when her father passed away suddenly in 1951. In 1958 she married Henry Peters and together they raised 6 children in Saskatoon.
After her children were grown, Mary worked outside the home for several years – including at Walmart for many years before she finally retired.
Mary and Henry always kept a big vegetable garden, but she also loved her flowers in particular. Henry and Mary enjoyed meeting their friends for breakfast almost every morning after their retirement and were often seen getting their exercise as they walked together in Lawson Heights Mall. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, and preparing a large meal was the highlight of many family gatherings. She always took the time to pray for each of her 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren by name – desiring each one to trust the Lord for their salvation. She faithfully attended church for most of her life until her health prevented her from doing so. While she was still able, Mary read her Bible and prayed for family on a daily basis, trusting her Lord with all of the different circumstances that came with being the matriarch of a large family.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Henry; her children, Florence Afseth (Wayne), Wayne (Lynn), Murray, Kelly (Heather), Randy (Sharon) and Jennifer Reimer (Robert); as well as 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Penner.
She was predeceased by her parents, Diedrich (1951) and Helena (1995) and the following brothers and sisters, Dick (1994), Susan (1999), John (1987), Helen (2000), Tina (1993), Annie (1993) and Jake (2001).
Mary will be missed dearly by her family. It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to a godly wife, mother, and grandmother.
A Funeral Service will be held for Mary at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at West Portal Church (3134 33rd St W, Saskatoon, SK.)
