Barry Hodge

Obituary of Barry Thomas Hodge

January 25, 1948-December 6, 2023

It is with great sadness that family of Barry Hodge announces his passing.  Barry died peacefully at Royal University Hospital on December 6th, 2023 from complications of neuro-endocrine cancer.  He was wonderful, kind and caring man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Barry is survived by his wife, Muriel Miller; daughter Christine Gaskin (Derek), sons Brett (Leslie Birch) and Kirk (Krystal); grandchildren Elaisha, Joshua, and Benjamin Gaskin, Oona and Django Hodge, and Anikka, Lily, Hudson and Georgia Hodge; sister Peggy Warren (Terry); nieces, nephews and numerous cousins; as well as Muriel's children Jordan Gasior (Ang) and Adrienne Gasior (Xavier Pilon) and their families; and his children’s mother, Joyce Hodge.  Barry was predeceased by his parents Fred and Nora Hodge.

Barry grew up on the family farm near Elstow, Saskatchewan, and spent many years farming alongside his father. He attended Elstow Elementary School and Clavet High School, then went on to complete a B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1974 at the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining the professional designation Professional Agrologist (P.Ag). Most of his working career was with Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) as Crop Supplies Sales Coordinator where he would regularly travel throughout north-eastern Saskatchewan.

Like all farm kids of his era, Barry valued hard work. He could fix or build anything. He had many interests including lawn bowling, gardening and yard work, woodworking, bridge and photography. He loved jazz (particularly Bill Evans' Peace Piece), cooking and baking (especially anything chocolate), biking and walking along the Meewasin trail, playing bridge and spending time with family. He was a dedicated member of the Nutana Lawn Bowling Club, and spent many hours maintaining the bowling greens. In retirement, Barry and Muriel traveled extensively, with trips to South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and many parts of Canada and the USA.
