My condolences to the Courtney family. Dr. Courtney was my favourite professor and wrote me a letter of recommendation for graduate school, for which I’m still grateful. He was always encouraging and so knowledgeable. I think of my time at the U of S fondly, in no small part because of knowing Dr. Courtney.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of John and Helen. John was a citizen of the University and the academy. He made significant contributions to his discipline, and he believed strongly in the importance of the University as a social institution. Our family will always remember John and Helen’s friendship, support, and kindness during out joint sabbaticals in the UK In 1972. Rest in peace from lives well lived.

I was very saddened to hear this news. Dr. Courtney was my very first instructor at the U of S when I started my post-secondary studies, and was a big part of why I majored in Political Studies. He was always exceptionally generous with his time and his counsel. Sincere condolences to the family for the loss of two great people.

John was a longstanding and distinguished member of the Hebrew University Halbert Advisory Committee on Canadian Studies, which I chair. It was always a pleasure to spend time with him at our annual meetings, and with him and Helen on the less frequent occasions when we had the opportunity to socialize.
In 2012-13, I spent the year in Washington, DC, and remember meeting John on the street. "John, what are you doing here? Are you at the Brookings Institution?" No. "Attending a conference?" No. "Then what?" He told me that many of their friends in Saskatoon went south to somewhere hot and sunny in the winter. Instead, he and Helen went to DC, and rented an apartment for several months. Helen loved art, of which there was a great deal in the City, and John loved politics, of which there was an inexhaustible supply, with think-tanks and political institutes thick as fleas on a dog's back scattered all over the downtown core. The weather was mild, if not hot and sunny, and they were both blissfully happy. I thought: how smart is that, and resolved to follow his example when I had the chance.
I shall miss them both.

I met John when he taught short courses for seniors. He was a skilled story teller. One could imagine events as he described, them, drawing word pictures. I was at his last U of S lecture. I noticed there were extra folks in the classroom. They were his family members who had come to enjoy his last class. At the close he announced "This will be my last lecture". I was privileged to be there at the end of a long and splendid teaching career. Of course, he went on to write another book! We became friends and shared volunteer guiding duties at the Western Development Museum. I asked for his help writing a eulogy for the Courtenay's neighbor across the street on Colony, Colin Clay. John responded willingly providing detail about an election back in the 1980s. He will be long remembered as a friend and a teacher.

John and Helen lived in my neighbourhood. We met on the first Hallowe'en I took my son trick-or-treating when they opened the door and he toddled straight into their (delicious-smelling) home. Upon finding out his name is Gabriel, as I called for him to come back, John burst into a rendition of "Blow Gabriel, Blow" so rousing that I joined him. Both he and Helen were impressed that I knew the song, even more so when I told them I did my due diligence before selecting the name. Apparently, such was their influence that even a brief encounter could have a lasting impact.

John was my professor 50 years ago when I entered the U of S. Along with Norman Ward and David Smith, he was a leading authority on Canadian politics. He influenced me and others who served in political life. He taught us much, although he isn’t responsible for any mistakes we may have made. He was a wonderful teacher and a true gentleman. Later in life, my wife Pauline and I were able to refer to John and Helen by their first names, and as friends. It was good to run into them as they went on long walks, or at social gatherings. They were very gracious people. We will remember them very fondly. Sincere condolences to the family.

John and Helen were around-the-corner neighbours in Nutana and we often saw them out hiking the neighbourhood. They always made a point to stop and have a chat about a variety of things, the state of politics among others, always including our son Jim who has a disability. We often ran into them, too, at the Field House, and they always stopped to give Jim encouragement on his workout. They were salt-of-the-earth people, gracious, welcoming, and friendly. The kind of neighbours we all wish to have and strive to be. We are sad our paths won't cross again, but we appreciate so much the times they did. Our condolences to the family.

I don't believe I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Courtney, but I have very much appreciated reading his work. I keep a copy of his contribution to the Canadian Democratic Audit, which I read as a PhD student, on my bookshelf. I can only imagine that his wife, Helen, contributed majorly to his successful career through her own labour on behalf of him and their family. They are now resting peacefully. I would like to send my condolences from London, Ontario. - Dr. Daisy Raphael

My memories of Hohn are all from UofS, where I knew him since my beginning there in 1994. Here was this smallish man, with the most kind demeanor and smile, always with a good word for a younger professor learning his way around the thing that ‘university’ is. John was always interested in our performances in the public-I am an opera singer, my wife my pianist. He just always showed interest. I will not forget that soon. Thanks John! Live long in memory!

Dear John, Lesley, Liam, Jackson and Quinn,
Laurel and I along with our family want to express our deepest condolences on the deaths of John Sr (Jed) and Helen.
I was fortunate to meet Jed and Helen shortly after meeting John. We were busy counting money on the floor of their living room after a successful day running a burger concession. They were both so happy for our success and we’re full of support for our endeavour.
That is what I will always remember about them. How kind they always were, their pleasure in finding out how we were doing and how gracious they always were.
Jed was always so happy telling stories. Our family was fortunate to have Jed tell us about all the nicknames Jed and Helen shared. Our kids saw then how in love they always were. Helen was a fantastic chef and host. I still have the macaroni and cheese recipe she gave me.
To be able to end their life together is a testament to their true and ongoing love for each other. We’ll never forget that and we will always respect the choice they made. We know that you all have memories of them that will stay with you forever.
Love always,
John and Laurel
