Obituary of David E. Gauley, C.M.

It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to Tom Gauley who passed away peacefully at his residence in Luther Special Care Home on May 4, 2016. Tom is survived by his three daughters Marg, Kathleen (Tim & Tia Wedge, together with Tom’s great grandsons Emmett and Will, and Ben and Aja Wedge) and Diane (Eric Ashworth), as well as his special companion Hanne Rasmussen. Tom was predeceased by his parents Tom and Mable and his siblings Lorne, Gladys and Mildred. Tom spent almost 70 years practicing law in Saskatoon having been a founding partner of Francis, Woods & Gauley in 1945. Tom’s firm merged with McDougall Ready in 2001 and continues to practice in Saskatchewan as McDougall Gauley LLP. Tom was one of Saskatchewan’s pre-eminent civil litigation lawyers throughout his career and it was his contributions to the legal profession in Saskatchewan which led to his being invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003. Despite a busy and successful career in law, Tom also found the time to devote his experience and energy to the community in such varied roles as a Member and Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Saskatchewan, as one of the incorporators and Directors of the Estey Centre for Law & Economics in International Trade and as a longtime member of the Saskatoon Kinsmen Club. Tom’s zest for life, his wonderful, although sometimes “slanted”, sense of humour, together with his honesty, integrity, and humility will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. The family would like to particularly thank the management and staff of Luther Special Care Home for the wonderful care which Tom received during the last year of his life. In lieu of flowers, Tom’s family would be grateful for any contributions which might be made to “The Tom Gauley Prize in Common Law Studies” at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan.
