Obituary of Marion Evans

Marion Ruth EVANS May 23, 1929 – April 19, 2016 With family at her side, Marion passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon after a sudden and brief illness. During her hospital stay Marion was surrounded by family members she deeply loved and devoted her life to. While living in Yorkton, Marion was predeceased by her husband Nick in 2002. Left to remember her are her loving son Larry (Beth), cherished grandchildren: Jason Evans (Patty Ogilvie-Evans), their children Taliah, Lucas, Tanner Ogilvie and Bailey Ogilvie; Michael Evans (Kerry Green) and their daughters Signe and Solveig; Lisa Evans (Lyndon Hicks). Marion is also survived by brothers Harold Gerla, William Gerla (Caroline) and sister Judi Moroz (Peter), loving cousin Olga Kaye, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, the remaining “Golden Girls”, and other lifelong friends in Yorkton, Flaxcombe and Manitoba. The eldest of four children, Marion was born to William and Eva Gerla and her early years were spent on the family farm prior to relocating to Theodore, SK. She went on to Teachers College in Saskatoon leading to a lengthy profession teaching elementary school, a career similarly followed by her siblings. After their marriage in 1950, Marion and Nick’s life took them to Alonsa, MB, where their son Larry was born, and to Flaxcombe, SK before finally returning to their “home” in Yorkton, where upon retirement her close friendships continued with “her esteemed Golden Girls”. Marion’s early retired years were filled with the joy of her three grandchildren, as well as years of travel including annual Caribbean cruises with Holland America. Throughout her life Marion also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, curling, gardening, cooking, reading, painting, playing cards, bowling, travelling and camping. Following Nick’s passing, Marion moved to the Sierras of Erindale in Saskatoon where she enjoyed Persephone Theatre, bowling and playing cards. Recent years were filled with the joy brought by her four cherished great grandchildren. Marion was blessed with good health and was able to live independently until April 2015 when she moved to assisted living at Preston Park II. While small in stature, her heart was huge, her laugh unforgettable. She will be lovingly remembered as Marion, sister, auntie, Mom, Little Grandma and GG. The family thanks the staff of Preston Park II for their care and support of Marion in the past year, as well as the Emergency Ward staff of Royal University Hospital for their attention and compassion.
