Obituary of Elisabeth Ward

A cherished mom, grandma, sister and aunt, Elisabeth Ward (nee Wall), aged 75, passed away in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on October 13, 2023 after a years’ long dignified battle against scleroderma.

She is survived by her son, Matthew and his wife Cathy; her daughter, Jennifer and her husband Michael; and her adored grandchildren, Elias, Noam, Abel and Emily; in addition to her 8 siblings, their spouses, 3 sisters-in-law and their families; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Barrie in 2016, a loss from which she had difficulty recovering.

Elisabeth was born in Saskatoon on January 14th, 1948, the second child of Henry and Maria Wall. She grew up on a Mennonite dairy farm, with the exception of a few of her early years in Mexico. She studied education at the U of S and during that time met a poor but charismatic young man named Barrie Ward who was the opposite of everything she had ever known. They were married on January 30th, 1970 and spent 46 years together raising Matthew and Jennifer, gardening, doing home renovations, hosting family and friends, and in their later years, watching Stephen Colbert and enjoying their grandchildren together.

Lisa was an incredible elementary school teacher, remembered by countless students as their best/favourite teacher ever, and by her colleagues as a patient, generous and wise mentor.

After retiring Lisa and Barrie liked to read and garden, enjoy coffee in their sunroom, make little trips within the province but above all visit their grandchildren. She was very hands-on and the kids will surely have many memories of her attending their sports events, baking with them, playing boards games with them, reading to them, and just conversing with them. She will be sorely missed.

A celebration of Lisa’s life will be held on Sunday, October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home.
