Wilfred Gatrell

March 29, 1940 - October 3, 2023

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Wilf Gatrell on Oct. 3, 2023.  He leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, Linda.  He is also survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchild, Patty (Bill), Eric (Kaitlin), Ryan, Brianne (Brett); Doug (Laurent); Judy, Madison (Ryan & Romy), Jordan (Justin), Paige (Adrienne); Michelle (Mitch), Brady & Emery.  He is also survived by his sisters, Elsie (Murray), Winnifred (Vince), Kathy (Tom), Janet (Laverne) and many nieces and nephews.  Wilf was predeceased by his parents, Daniel & Winnifred; brothers Andy (Evelyn), Frank (Edie), Jack (Evelyn), Stan (Lynda); sister Georgie (Rod); mother and father-in-law Arthur & Pearl.

Wilf was born in Broadview, SK on March 29, 1940 to Daniel and Winnifred Gatrell.  He was raised on the family farm with his 5 sisters and 4 brothers.  Wilfred wore many different hats during his time in Broadview, he worked on a dairy farm, drove a school bus and was part owner of Broadview Meat Market until he began a new career with Saskatchewan Transportation Company. He moved his family to Humboldt, North Battleford and then settled in Saskatoon until his retirement after 27 years.  He logged almost 2 million miles on Saskatchewan highways. 

Wilf volunteered many hours with the Broadview Fire Department, Lions Club, School Board and the United Church.  He also offered many volunteer hours at McClure United Church in Saskatoon.  Wilf loved spending time at the Wildwood Golf Course for many years and even got a hole in 1 on #3.  He also enjoyed the coffee dates at McDonalds with all his “pals”.  Dad could repair and fix anything, and he did with enthusiasm.

Dad enjoyed travelling and one of his most memorable trips was to London to visit Doug & Laurent.  He also often talked about the trip he and mom took to the Maritimes.  It was common for them to jump in the car at the last minute and head to Winnipeg to visit Judy and other family along the way.

Most of all Dad enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow up. Dad was a kind, gentle man, and he will be missed by his family and whomever had the honor of knowing him.

Funeral Service will be held on Nov 4^th, 2023 at 1:30 pm at McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor Street East.  The service is also going to be livestreamed.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Saskatoon SPCA.
