Obituary of Daniel Flegel
Daniel Flegel was born in 1926 in Grayson, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Frances, his siblings, Anne, Tilly, Johnny, and August, and his seven children, Patricia (Claude) Kuechle, Catherine, Joseph, Bernadette, Monica, George (Sarah Korbo), Stephen and his fiancée, Lauren Nicklin, and grand-children Mark, Ashley, Aaron, Ryan, Rebecca, Sydney, and Robert. He is pre-deceased by his parents, August Flegel and Johanna (Klein) and his brother George.
Dan grew up on a farm near the Qu’Appelle Valley. He attended St. Thomas College in Battleford, Saskatchewan, before completing his novitiate at St. Norbert in Manitoba. He entered the seminary at Saint-Charles Scholasticate in Battleford, but left when he was called to the married life. He met Frances McQuaid in Saskatoon through the Notre Dame Club, and they married in 1967. They went on to have seven children.
Dan had a deep faith and was devoted to his God and to his family. He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier parish in Saskatoon for many years, and more recently, of St. Joseph’s. He loved wood-working, being with his family, and watching films, particularly movies with John Wayne. Despite a number of years of ill health following a stroke in 1991, he lived to see his children and grand-children grow and thrive.
Dan died peacefully, in the company of his family, on April 22nd. The family wants to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of St. Paul’s Hospital, who made his last hours comfortable for both him and his family.
