With heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of, Wendy Ellen Schaan, on July 15th, 2023 following a brief illness and hospitalization.
She was born in Saskatoon on April 6th, 1973 to Norma Jean and Allen Schaan. She attended Bishop Murray and St. Philip Elementary Schools and Holy Cross High School. Over the years she worked in the food industry, graduated as a Library Technician, and worked at La Ronge Public Library before returning to Saskatoon where she was employed as an Administrative Assistant at AECOM, SaskPower, Saskatoon Open Door Society. For the past four years she worked at the Saskatoon Housing Coalition where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her co-workers and especially the visits by Daisy, the unofficial office therapy dog.
Wendy volunteered for St. John’s Ambulance #7 Saskatoon MFR Unit for 23 years, rising to the ranks of Unit Chief for the last two years. She was especially honoured to have been nominated for and to receive the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her dedicated years of service. Volunteering at Telemiracle and the Exhibition Week were her favourite duties.
Wendy was the self-appointed Family Social Director, from ensuring our family’s participation in a variety of activities such as attending fundraisers for the SPCA, WANAR, Nashi to keeping us informed about all the ‘National Days’ such as: National Ice Cream, 7-11, Chocolate and Pizza Days. She always gave us the heads up about events such as Fireside Singers performances, Pets in the Park, and Taste of Saskatchewan.
Wendy had a life long love of dogs-all dogs. She always had a treat available for a visiting dog at work. She was especially fond of our dogs Mr. Muggs and Sam.
She was a patriotic sports fan-always cheering on the Canadian Figure Skaters and Team Canada during the World Juniors and Olympics. She even went so far as to cheer for the Edmonton Oilers even if it did irritate her Dad.
She was predeceased by her Grandparents Thomas and Reginna Schaan, Grandpa Norm Wurtz, Uncle Kenneth Schaan and Aunt Karen Wurtz.
Wendy was a kind-hearted soul who quickly stepped in to help any of her family or friends. She was loved and will be deeply missed by her parents, Norma Jean and Allen Schaan, Grandma Connie Wurtz, as well as many relatives in the Schaan, Rau, Smith, Wurtz, and Mackay families. She will also be missed by many friends and colleagues.
Funeral Service will be on Saturday July 22nd, 2023 at 10:30am at St. Philip Neri Parish (1902 Munroe Ave) with an Internment at a later date. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed at https://stphilipneriparish.ca/
Donations in Wendy’s memory can be made to any animal rescue organization or charity of your choice and would be greatly appreciated.
