Obituary of Elvira Doris Schindel
ELVIRA DORIS SCHINDEL (nee Martens)
MARCH 26, 1928 – JULY 9, 2023
It is with great sadness, the family of Elvira Schindel announces her passing on Sunday, July 9th at Cedar Gardens Care Home at the age of 95. Elvira was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1928 the middle child of seven children. The family moved to Saskatoon where she completed her high school.
She met and married the love of her life – Bill Schindel in 1947. They had three children and Elvira devoted her time to raising them, spending many hours in her massive garden and preparing family favorites in the kitchen. When the children were older, Elvira went back to work as a medical receptionist/secretary and enjoyed her return to the workforce for many years.
Weekends and holidays were spent packing up the family and going camping to many different lakes in northern Saskatchewan. In the early 60s, Bill and Elvira fell in love with Candle Lake and built a cottage. After retirement they spent almost six months each year living at the lake. Elvira took up golfing in her fifties and it was her new passion. She spent many hours on the golf course and when she wasn’t golfing she loved to go for long walks.
Elvira is survived by her children, Terry Ponath, Barry (Donna) Schindel, Ron (Nancy) Schindel; grandchildren, Nicole Ponath, Mike (Ellen) Ponath, Justin (Jaimee) Schindel, Christine (Ryan) Green, Stephanie (Brett) Husky, Curtis (Dana) Schindel; greatgrandchildren, Kyra, Jesse, & Bennett Ponath; Gradyn & Ayla Green; Riel, Ada, Emily, Billy & Weston Husky; Brighton Boyko & Leo Schindel. She is also survived by her sister in Ottawa, Lee Boor, and sisters-in-law, Gladys, Helen, and Katy Schindel.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, son-in-law, Lyle Ponath, her parents, John & Tina Martens, two brothers Arthur and Norm and three sisters, Alice, Delphine and Alta.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
