Dorothy Jean Schaffel (Porter)
1924 - 2016
Dorothy passed away on Friday March 18,
2016 a t 92 years o f a g e . She was
predeceased by her husband Frank Schaffel,
parents Hugh Porter and Isabella Porter (nee
Fraser), brother Robert, and sisters Agnes
Simpson and Mary Wagner. She is survived
by her sister Irene Bobyk, sons Bill (Ann
March) and Don (Linda), grandchildren Craig
(Julie Kang), Garry (Carol Faid), Scott (Keri),
Carrie, Cory (Karen), Julia and Alex Schaffel,
six great-grandchildren as well as many
treasured nieces and nephews and numerous
other relatives. Dorothy was born March 4,
1924 near Bredenbury, Saskatchewan. She
attended elementary school in Saltcoats and
took high school by correspondence. She met
her future husband Frank in 1943 while she
was working as an egg candler in Watrous.
They married in 1945, staying in Watrous
where Bill and Don were born. In 1952 they
moved to Saskatoon and bought the Drop Inn
Lunch at Five corners on Broadway, where
Dorothy operated the cafe´ and added
Dorothy’s Catering as a second business in
1960. The catering business was successful,
providing meals for many events around
Saskatoon and the surrounding area. Frank
passed away in 1976 and in 1980 Dorothy
sold the building and business. She started a
new adventure, obtaining her real estate
license and continuing to work until retiring in
1985. Even with her commitments to her
careers, she found time to stay in touch with
family and friends and to travel, enjoying
memorable trips to England, Scotland and
Germany to visit family and to Hawaii to enjoy
the weather. Retirement meant time for more
activities. Dorothy was always happy to play a
game of cards or bingo, meet new people,
renew old friendships and spend time with
her extended family. She was a long time
Roughrider fan and watched the Blue Jays
faithfully, win or lose. She was never idle. As
well as creating many gifts and special orders
for family and friends she crocheted dozens
of lap robes for local nursing homes and
knitted hundreds of pairs of mittens and
slippers for local charities. She maintained
her independence to the end of her life. We
will always miss her. For those wishing to
make a memorial donation, Dorothy was a
long time supporter and fundraiser for the
Kinsmen Telemiracle donations may be
