Thank you, Mr. Gallagher, for teaching me to play guitar when I was one of two young women in your class, in 1994 for a short time. I will always appreciate your patience with me and remember your kindness and sense of humor. Big condolences to Mr. Gallagher's family and friends <3

I did my teaching internship at Nutana Collegiate in '92 and while I remember working with an amazing staff, the only name I have always recalled was Joe Gallagher; although I was in only one single class of his, it was one I'll never forget and became a story which I have told hundreds of times, if not more. While on the surface it is an amusing tale, beneath it is the fundamental wisdom with which First Nations people instill values and lessons. It is done without a direct criticism nor judgment, and often with humour, and it allows us all to examine ourselves within the context of myths, fables, or in Joe's case, a beautiful modern adaptation, without feeling singled out and defensive and losing out on the lesson we should learn. In this instance, the students were filing in and when a female student took a desk in front of his, he addressed the class with, "Did I ever tell you the story of my uncle the horse thief?" Her immediate reaction was a cry of, "NOOO!!! DON'T TELL THAT STORY!!!", and dropped her head onto her folded arms on her desk in abject misery...Joe turned to me with a bit of a smile and I said, "Well I want to hear that story... In a very serious tone, he spoke of an uncle who was caught stealing horses and the penalty at that time was death by hanging. He was mounted on a horse and and with a rope around his neck and thrown over the branch of a tree, the horse was whipped and he was left dangling but the branch broke and the law was that if you survived a hanging, you would go free. (At this point the girl is groaning audibly and rolling her head back and forth on her arms.) But Joe's face took a sad expression as he recounted how the rope left a distinct red scar around his neck and his uncle had to live with the shame of everyone knowing his past..."And as I look out at my class, I am sad to see horsethieves among us." I then observed a distinct ring of hickies around the student's neck and I was in delighted amazement at that teacher's gift and have been retelling with a sincere gratitude for being present to see and learn from myself...I can't wait to see him again and tell him myself, God willing. It's a pic of me (not in Joe's class, unfortunately) and the school where I learned from Joe and all the wonderful staff.

It was 1981, my first teaching assignment, and I had the good fortune of being placed at Westmount School where Joe was teaching at the time. He was my "rock"... his gentle, quiet, kind, steady demeanour of unquestionable integrity, left a lasting impression. My sincere condolences to his family. Sandra Ellis-Rollack

Brian and the rest of Joe's family, please accept my deepest sympathy in the passing of your father and grandfather. Joe will always be remembered as one of the finest ambassadors of the sport of fastball in Saskatoon. Myself being an umpire,Joe was always a gentleman on and off the diamond!! I do not remember the first time I met Joe,(no doubt on the diamond) but I will always cherish the last time. Brian had brought his father to watch some of the World Fastball Championships at BVI stadium. They were seated in the front row down the first base bleachers. Joe, as always, was glued to the action on the field. I made my way down to shake their hands and exchange plesantries as was the normal everytime I met Joe around GHP or any of the other diamonds. Even in his frail state, Joe had his pleasant gentlemanly demeanor front and centre. A man larger than life itself. Rest in peace Joe. You will be missed.

I wish to send my condolences to Joe's family and friends. He was without question one of the most qualified pioneers in First Nations education. He broke barriers and proved that you can connect with Aboriginal Youth. Thank you Joe for teaching us to be proud of who we are, and helping us to achieve and reach our goals.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of starting my teaching career, along with Joe, in 1975 at Westmount. Also, I enjoyed sharing a ball diamond with Joe on several occasions, both as a player and later as an umpire. I thoroughly enjoyed his presence, wherever it happened to be. May he rest in peace.
