Doreen Reid
REID - Doreen Eleanor (Fetterley) passed away peacefully March 4, 2016, in the care of the wonderful staff in the palliative care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital and of her closest family.
Born June 17, 1929 in Davidson SK, Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Willard (Bill) (1933-1989), parents (May and Charles Fetterley) and 15 siblings and half-siblings. She is survived by her sister Irma Brownlee, children Larry (Angela Contreras Chávez) and grandson Marcos Reid-Contreras; Diane and grandson Christopher Mykota-Reid; Irving (Karen) and grand-daughters Ellen and Laura, and Lynette (Olga Kits).
Before and in her early marriage, she sewed elaborate crests by hand for Crest Craft. After starting her family, friends and family benefited from her skills as a seamstress and also as a cook, gardener, and berry grower. A highlight of her curling career was playing with the Saskatchewan team in the 1988 Canadian Senior Women’s Championship. She was a fixture at the Saskatoon Bridge Club, an important outlet for her considerable intelligence. She was a member of the Saskatchewan bridge team for the 2004 Canada Seniors Games. Many remember her for her generosity and the strong contributions she made to the community. She organized rides for adults with developmental disabilities to attend Grosvenor Park United Church and canvassed for the Heart Fund. She is remembered fondly as a “second mother” by nieces, grand-nieces and nephews and friends of her children who called her house home in their university years and her home was always open to relatives traveling through the city. She made her last Meals on Wheels deliveries the day the symptoms of her final, brief illness took her to the Emergency Department.
