Obituary of Dale O'Shaughnessy

On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Dr. B. Dale O’Shaughnessy passed away peacefully in his sleep at home. He was eighty-five. Born to Gerald O’Shaughnessy and Vera Mayall (nee Antill) in Moose Jaw, Dale graduated from the College of Medicine at the U of S. He married his high school sweetheart, “Lollie”, in 1961. They were married for 62 years. Together, they raised five children (Karen, Twyla, Danny, Brian, and Tim).

Dale began his career practicing medicine for six years in Timmins, Ontario, before the call of the prairies brought him home. He settled in Kindersley where he continued his practice. After seven years, he took a year off at the family’s treasured Turtle Lake cottage where he drove “bus” for his five children (and others), cut timber and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Dale returned to the U of S where he earned a degree in pathology. He worked at PA’s Vic Hospital as Chief of Pathology for nineteen years. After retiring, he took on several short-term locums at Saskatoon City Hospital.

In recent years, Dale enjoyed sudoku and especially cribbage. His final game of crib was a victory!

Dale was an outdoorsman. Fall was spent hunting ducks, geese, upland game and the occasional deer or antelope. He loved to fish, and summers were spent crammed into a twelve-foot boat with the entire family and a labradour or two. He enjoyed cross-country skiing and played old-timer hockey for many years. He maintained many birdfeeders and reveled in attracting a variety of songbirds. Dale’s passion was skeet and trap shooting. He was active in the PA Wildlife Federation. He loaded his own shells, visited the range as often as time permitted and enjoyed the camaraderie and competition of fellow shooters. He got close, but the perfect score ultimately eluded him by one point.

Dale is survived by his loving wife, Lol, five children and eight grandchildren.

As per his wishes, we will be holding a private celebration of his life.
