My condolences to the McNevin family for your recent loss. George hired this young U of S student to work at Eagle Plains in the summer of 1985. I walked in to the Youth Employment Centre in Saskatoon and saw a posting for a job in the Yukon and my imagination went wild…I had always wanted to see the Yukon and to actually get paid to see the Territory was a bonus. I immediately arranged for a job interview and met with George the same day. The interview was a solid 2 hours in length comprised of specific questions and what seemed like hanging out at some work shop. I was surprised then about the length of time for the interview but later figured out that George was determining if I would fit-in at Eagle Plains. It was expensive to transport workers that distance from Saskatoon and the last thing the company wanted was staff turn over. George told me I had the job and that the plane was leaving first thing the next day. I scrambled to get ready and even managed to get a quick haircut. George told me that the plane would land on the Dempster Highway which did not impress my mother when I told her. One memory I had of George was the amount of coffee he drank. I believe we refuelled the aircraft in Norman Wells (NWT) and George filled a thermos with coffee. There was a point in the trip that George got a bit squirmy, then a lot squirmy but somehow managed to hang on until we made it to the runway on the Dempster Highway. I was pleased to add value to the operation at Eagle Plains and George had me return the next summer as well. I received a call in the spring of 1986 to see if I would return and if I could get there as soon as possible. I told him that I was about to write my final exams and he suggested something like the exams weren’t necessary! I did write the exams and Garnet, myself, and a couple other people drove non stop from Saskatoon to Eagle Plains in a mini van. I recall there was some discussion about the selection of music but Garnet seemed to always get his way (CCR?). It was a fun road trip and a great experience. I fondly look back at my time at Eagle Plains and have told people many, many times I would do it all again. I am grateful to George for taking a chance on me and it set me on a path where I still live in the Yukon. The McNevin family were all wonderful to me. Stan is legendary in the Yukon and is even featured in the Transportation Museum in Whitehorse. I can not imagine the stories George could tell about Eagle Plains, but plan to check-in with him some day. What a character!

My sincere condolences to Stan and the family. George was most certainly a larger than life character. I will never forget first meeting him at his office in the Bessborough, smoking a cigarette at his desk well after the time such things were done in "polite society". He inspired this prairie boy in that meeting to go to eagle plains for the summer which was the nexus for my love of the North (and why I now call the Yukon home). Though I was probably one of hundreds of people he'd hired for one thing or another, George shaped the trajectory of my life in a huge way. I can only imagine the gap he has left in his family and my heart goes out to you all.

My sincerest condolences to the family. George was a long-standing customer of Russell food equipment..I always enjoyed our visits up in his office having coffee and the only office in Saskatoon where we could enjoy a smoke sitting in front of his little fan. He always asked about how the farming was going and when I was going to vote for The Liberals. I can remember when it was time to go it would be always a little longer as he would have a few jokes to tell. We will miss him. I am sorry that I can’t make it to the funeral but will be thinking of you all. God Bless. Mel
