Obituary of Ernest Bhasker Sundaram

Dr. Ernest Bhasker Sundaram FRCSC 1925-2023, son of Bishop Gabriel Sundaram and Caroline John from Secunderabad , India, was brought up by his loving stepmother Rajabai Sundaram. After a lifetime of service in India he spent the last three years of retirement in Saskatoon, Canada , where he was laid to rest.

He excelled in academics and was awarded the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur scholarship for training in premier medical schools in India. Dr. Bruce Carruthers (Miraj Medical Center), Dr. Paul Brand and Dr. Reeves Betts (Christian Medical College Vellore) were his mentors. This was followed training in surgery in McGill university in 1959 under Dr. Rocke Robertson. He did his fellowship in Duke University after which he returned to Bareilly,India to work (as the first Indian medical superintendent ) in Clara Swain hospital which is written about in the book by Dorothy Clarke Wilson, “Palace of Healing”. https://archive.org/details/palace-of-healing-the-story-of-dr.-clara-swain/Palace of healing; the story of Dr. Clara Swain

After decades of serving in rural hospitals he had realized the necessity for providing resources for the development of the community. This led to the creation of the Naujhil Integrated Rural Project for health and development (NIRPHAD) which incorporated his commitment to enable the marginalized populations with self-sustaining solutions to empower them.

His love of life, and passion for tennis (he played till the age of 90 ) will be missed by all those who knew him. He is remembered fondly by Sheila, his wife for 62 years, his children Anita Sundaram, Vinita Sundaram( Chrys Pradeep Henry) Amardeep Sundaram ( Susana Tobia) and grandchildren Anushka Henry , Pablo and Ines Sundaram.  

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Anglican Cathedral (816 Spadina Crescent E, Saskatoon, SK.) at Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 2:30 p.m.
