Elin Sigridur Johnson was born at Mozart, Saskatchewan, to Oscar and Eliza Johnson. She was predeceased by an infant brother, Oscar Gerald Johnson. Elin started her education at Mozart, but bussed to Wynyard for high school. She came to Saskatoon at age 17 in 1956 to attend the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation, she worked briefly in California. Elin returned to Saskatoon and began working in her profession for Pinder’s Drugs. She eventually progressed to being the buyer for the company and worked at that level until her retirement.
Elin was a devoted daughter to her parents and cared for them until their passing – Oscar in 1987 and Eliza in 1991. However, Elin formed close friendships with others who brought her into their families. She was particularly close to Blair and Peggy Meldrum, first in Saskatoon and then when the family moved to Virginia. Elin holidayed with the Meldrum’s for 35 years, summers until her parents passed and then for Christmas. She was Auntie Johnson or AJ to the children, whom she dearly loved.
Elin loved music, art, and good literature. Her living room contained her piano, which she played for many, many years, and there were many books from several genres, allowing her a variety of things to read without having to go to the library.
Elin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life. Elin served in many offices of the Church, but most members will remember her service as a pianist/accompanist or as a worker or director at the Family History Centre. She helped many patrons discover their family roots and branches from around the world, forming many friendships that have endured. Elin’s ability to serve and mingle diminished over time, but she remained connected to friends and her cousins as well as technology would allow.
Elin spent her last weeks in hospital or other care, but was supported by friends from the Church throughout. While she will be missed, her friends and family know she has gone home to a better place. Special thanks to Brenda and Clavin Rempel for all their support and service over the years and to Brenda McKay for her compassionate care over the past several months as well as the Sisters of the Relief Society at the Wanuskewin Ward of the Church of Latter-day Saints for their sacrifices and hard work to help Elin be comfortable and safe in her own home or while in care.
The funeral service for Elin Sigridur Johnson will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 10:30 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1429 – 10th Street East, Saskatoon) conducted by Bishop Keith Willoughby. Elin will be interred next to her parents in the Isfeld plot at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Wynyard, Saskatchewan. The Service will be livestreamed and can be accessed by the zoom link at the top of this page. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
