Tansi (Hello in Cree),
I am sharing my deepest sympathies with the family of Desiree. Having only heard about this recently, I’m saddened by this loss. I had the pleasure of knowing Desiree through University student leadership. She was serving as the USSU Vice President of Academic Affairs, and I had just started university. She was always on the ground with students and I was happy to share many conversations with her on the organization, on school, and so many other topics (especially in music). In her time in law school I was happy to continue our friendship. She had a huge impact on the campus community.
It’s so hard to hear about her passing, as she had so much more to offer among all her accomplishments and goals. I am privileged to have had the chance to know her and talk with her, these will be memories I carry with me.
Thank you to the family, especially to Simon (who I believe I met once when running into Desiree), for sharing Desiree with us at the U of S. Super grateful we crossed paths at school.
Kīhtwam (Again),
Regan Ratt-Misponas

I met Desiree in 2010 at a conference with the Canadian Catholic Students Association - she struck me as a beautiful, intelligent, strong woman (with an amazing voice!) - but most of all I was impressed by her deep faith. I had newly encountered my Catholic faith as a 1st year university student, so to see another student like myself already living her faith so deeply was very inspiring. We actually met again the next summer serving on CCO's IMPACT mission in Ottawa! Desiree and I were on the same parish team so we spent a lot of time together. She was an absolute gem. So kind, thoughtful, loving - our team tended to get into spats quite frequently and she was a peace-keeper, but also a natural born leader. I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of her death. Desiree, I thank God for the wondrous gift of your existence! Pray for us! With love, Julia

Dear David and Dorene and family. I am so sorry to hear of Desirée's death. Although I didn't know her as an adult, I always felt cheered and edified by the love and gentleness with which you raised your children, such an example to me. One of the fruits of your efforts was Desirée, a beautiful, loving, accomplished young woman. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Our Condolences to all...
We are eternally grateful for precious Desiree who had a one on one Faith study with our precious daughter Priscilla
years ago, who ended up going through Conversion and entering The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church!...here is a recent email from her witnessing to a friend...I think Desiree would have been very proud of her :0)...Priscilla writes...
It's in response to a friend who said they aren't Church people or religious. But was married in the Church and baptized their children.
(Priscilla's response)
I totally understand. I was in the same boat. I had ZERO interest in learning about the Catholic Faith and I thought Mass was super boring. It wasn't until I went through a crisis
that brought me to my knees in prayer...I think I said something like...God, please open my mind to the Truth...and all of a sudden I was interested in learning more about Catholicism. The Incredible lives of the Saints, the hundreds of scientifically proven Eucharistic Miracles and Apparitions of Our Lady!...still happening today!...once I was learning all the Truth...I
couldn't unlearn it and go back. I converted...our Catholic Ancestors weren't using the Church as a crutch...they were learning the depp rich truths of the faith which have sadly been watered down in our generation to seem boring and useless.
It's so sad, there's so much more to life than what we've been told.
Being a practising Catholic continuing to go deeper in the One True Catholic and Apostolic Faith...is wildly exciting...especially in these times that we have been chosen to live in.
Mom, I am eternally grateful for you and your prayers for my conversion.
Thank you Jesus and Mama Mary.
Talking to this friend has reminded me how conversion doesn't just happen, Jesus, Mary, I love you, save souls.
Thanks be
to God and Mother Mary!...and to Desiree for sowing those precious seeds of Faith...
Blessings

To David and Dorene Steele, many years ago, I attended St. Francis Xavier parish here in Saskatoon, and I remember your family with such fondness. James and Desiree were so well behaved, and you , as parents, showed your love for each other freely in church, and I knew you were a truly amazing and loving family. As the years continued, I saw those young children grow up, and now seeing the obituary in the newspaper, I was shocked, and very, very saddened by your devastating loss! As I read through the beautifully and extremely well-written obituary, I could see that you have raised a truly accomplished young woman, who had matured, loved, married, excelled in a plethora of activities, established herself in a career in law, and touched the lives and hearts of so many others! What a legacy your daughter has left to the world, and the heavens are rejoicing! May your hearts be touched profoundly by God's love and peace, as you navigate the next days, weeks, months, and years. God bless. from Margaret Symon-Lungal.

To Desiree's parents, her husband and those close to her:
I was immensely shocked this morning to learn of Desiree's passing. While I was not close with her, she was a familiar face to me at Our Lady of Lourdes, and later in the halls and cafeteria of STM. On the few occasions I spoke with her, she always struck me as a kind and generous person, who loved to have a laugh while chatting. It gave me pleasure to glance from time to time at U of S announcements and witness her upward trajectory through the ranks of the student union, and the fruits of her hard work in law school.
I think it is a rare thing for persons of such good heart to excel and rise to power as rapidly and tremendously as Desiree, and it grieves me that the world has lost such a precious combination. In the universe, the brightest stars are always the first to leave, but if there is such a thing as paradise, I know her addition has made it a better and brighter place indeed.
My condolences and love to all of you.

Desiree was such an amazing and wonderful individual and I was so blessed to get to work with her. I remember at work the many times Desiree would message me with what she thought was silly questions and apologize for them and I would tell her that its okay and there wasn't a need to apologize. Also I remember the many laughs and conversations that I would have sitting in her office at work and talking about everything from our families to my cats :) Desiree always made sure that everyone who knew her & worked with her knew how much they were appreciated. Desiree never ceased to bring a smile to the faces of those she knew and I am glad and blessed that I was one of those people who got to share in the wonderful light that she was. Desiree truly embodied what it means to have a heart of gold and she will be greatly missed!! I am sending all of my thoughts and prayers to Simon and the rest of her family and for all of those who knew her she will be missed greatly by all who knew her and I will miss her smile, laughter and humor everyday!

Simon and Desiree’s family: May the Lord strengthen and comfort you as He walks with you through your great loss. Desireé was such a beautiful soul and her sweet friendship was a wonderful gift to me in law school. She was quick to share her wisdom, her jokes, and her cookies with me while we studied. Desireé lit up a room with her smile when she entered it and she always shone with God’s love and light. I consider myself blessed to have been her friend. With sincerest condolences and prayers for you all.

Dear Simon, yours and Desiree's family,
Wow! What an amazing woman God gave you! It appears she has been a gift from God to all those whose lives she touched, It was so encouraging and challenging to read about her life, truly an example to us as how to walk with Jesus. May the Lord comfort you in your grief and enable you to praise Him for the gift of Desiree. Like the Apostle Paul, she has fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Now she will receive the crown of righteousness to lay at Jesus's feet. Glory to God!!!
Love and prayers,

As an undergraduate, Desirée took classes in international relations from me and was an exceptional and memorable student- exceptional because of both her intelligence and diligence, and memorable because she was such a sincere and caring person. She grieved over suffering in Third World countries. She felt the pain of victims of hunger, war and natural disasters. She wanted the world to be a better and more compassionate place. She was a bright spirit. To our friends and neighbors David and Doreen, as well as to James and others in Desirée’s family, Carolyn and I and express our most sincere sympathy.

David, Dorene, Simon and Family: I was so saddened to learn of Desiree. I knew her little at St. Phillip Neri. What I do remember is how she radiated Love of God, and Gods Love literally. I am not even sure I met her in person, but I sure knew that Gods light was in her. Therefore I can attest to her motto. David and Dorene, I truly cannot comprehend the sorrow in your hearts at this time and for life. Know that though she has died, that she has risen to live with Christ, Mary and all the angels and saints. I have no doubt that her prayers for us remaining will have glorious outcomes from our Lord. My deepest condolences.

I will be forever grateful for the time I was blessed to have Desiree in my life. Though only a few years, I will be forever changed by the way she showed her love for and trust in God through every season. She was always caring for others, even when she needed the care. Dear Simon, David, Doreen and family,
As I just begin to reflect on this sad news, my first and surely abiding thought is one of gratitude. I knew Desiree briefly but indelibly. I had the privilege of working with her on occasional but often intense matters when she was VP Academic and I was an associate dean in Arts and Science. I worked with hundreds of students in my thirty years at the University, but I never met anyone as dedicated to serving her fellow students as Desiree was, nor any student more capable in that regard. I will never forget one especially difficult hearing involving many people, including several very experienced faculty and administrators, when it was Desiree who proposed a solution so wise and compassionate that there was really no further discussion. It was perhaps the finest student moment that I ever witnessed. I will mourn her deeply, but I know I will return to a place of profound gratitude for having known her. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved her. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Simon, David, Doreen and family
My heart is heavy to hear of the graduation of Desiree to the great cloud of witnesses.
I have no doubt that Desiree was welcomed by Jesus with open arms. Her short life was lived for the glory of God.
Heaven’s gain is our loss though.
The night before she died, I had the privilege to be with her at the hospital, we celebrated the Eucharist together and her last words were: “I won’t see you here anymore. The next time it will be in heaven and it will be a Celebration, but I give Jesus the biggest hug from you when I see him.”
Even in her last hours of her life she was concerned for others and spoke blessing and life. I remember a few months ago when we were together, she told me: “I know that God can heal me, but he does not owe me a miracle. Either way I will be fine.”
May the Holy Spirit comfort you and be close in the midst of grieve and sorrow.
Our time is in his hands and the good news is that death is not the end. Paul instructed the church in Thessalonians that we are not the ones that grieve without hope because of the death and resurrection of Christ (1 Thes 4:13).
Grieving we do, yet not without hope because the day will come that “Jesus will wipe away every tear of our eyes and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former has passed” (Rev 21:4).
May we keep our eyes on Jesus and let the death of Desiree remind us of the eternal glory that awaits. May we run the race God has set before us with endurance and being aware of the great cloud of witnesses cheering us on (Heb 12:1).
Blessings on all of you in this difficult season. May God’s comfort and nearness surround you all. In deep honour and prayer,
Fr. Nico+, Regina, SK
