From 1962 to 1966, Don and I attended Brunskill Primary School's "smart kids" program together. When we reconnected many years later, his memories of those days were a source of amazement and admiration - he had a writer's gift for meaningful details of people and events that I had long forgotten. His stories had a quality of amused understanding of the human situation, with compassion and kindness. ("The Perfection of His Failure", "Coyote"...) My life has been made richer by knowing this fine man, and made poorer by his loss. Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale...

I'm both shocked and saddened to learn Don has died. He was a thoughtful and compassionate reader and edited one of my books for the press he founded. He contributed so much to the writing community (including his work with the Prairie Messenger) and was admired by so many. My deepest condolences to his immediate family and to his relatives.

In my teens, I remember Don as being one cool order brother; not mine, that is, but close enough at the time. His taste in music at the time was quite inspirational.
Rest in peace.

To the Ward family,
I’m sad to read of Don’s passing. We served together for several years on the board of PARTNERS for Family Support in Humboldt. His wit, compassion and wisdom were a welcome addition to our meetings. Many people have benefited from his efforts in this area. My condolences, Elaine Loehr

Dear Colleen and family,
So sorry to hear of the passing of a former colleague from STM.
Enjoyed every moment and interaction I had with Don. He was witty and congenial all the time.
Don was a good man. Our thought and prayers are with you at this time.

Dear Colleen & family:
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Don's death, which came far too early. He was a decent and talented man with a good sense of humour. I know how keenly you will miss him. I hope and trust that your family members and friends will gather closely around you at this difficult time.
