I played tennis with Fred for many years through the Nutana Community Tennis Club. He was an enthusiastic player, and from time to time enjoyed a pint and swapping stories afterwards. One of my favourites was the one about an 'insurance' scheme he and his schoolmates devised, wherein whoever was unlucky enough to get the strap would collect a payout. It still makes me chuckle. My condolences to all of Fred's loved ones.
