Obituary of Lorne Arthur Sully

Lorne passed away at home Dec 27, 2017. He is survived by his wife Donna, daughters Jill (Mike) Letal and Heather Sully, grandchildren Iris, Juliet, Freya and Graham Letal, Celia and Rose Newell, sisters Doreen (Barry) Theisen and Donna (Jim) Mader, special Aunt Connie Leibel and family. Lorne was born in Biggar, spent time in Unity, and headed to Saskatoon as a young man to begin his journey as a life-long learner at the U of S. Lorne was dedicated to his career as an urban planner teaching classes and evaluating exams. He had an enduring interest in history, particularly of First Nations. His interest in planning brought many international adventures including to the Ukraine, Philippines and Guyana. He lectured in Chiapas, Mexico, and was awarded an honorary doctorate. He is known for his work facilitating the creation of urban reserves and has been a strong advocate for economic inclusion of indigenous people world-wide. Lorne valued diversity and we continue to teach and practice this as a family. Lorne was an avid reader and had an incredible breadth of knowledge. Last week he was still clipping articles to pass along. He was happy chatting about current events and local history. We’ll forever miss our encyclopedia at the ready! Lorne shared his knowledge helping many of us along our life’s journey, especially his family. He was an advocate for anyone who crossed his path asking for guidance. A true loss is the endless advice he was sure to give his grandchildren; a troop he absolutely adored. Lorne loved to be outdoors gardening, hunting and fishing, especially in the deep sea. Lorne and Donna travelled extensively in their retirement, including spending winters in Mexico with their cherished friends and the warm Mexican people. He could not stop buying fridge magnets or t’shirts on their trips. Many journeys involved children and grandkids. We have received many messages about how kind and giving Lorne was over the course of his life. We believe he would be happy to continue this with donations to the Saskatoon Food Bank. Lorne wished there be no service; we will distribute his ashes in his favorite spots with his favorite people.
