Dear Pat,
My sincere condolences on your loss. I truly appreciate the support both you and Fred have provided to our students over the years by annually hosting our large 2nd year introductory horticulture class in which students gained direct insight into greenhouse production of tomato, pepper and cucumber crops. That required a lot of effort and coordination to provide the students with this rare chance to gain first hand knowledge of greenhouse vegetable production. A visit to your greenhouse operation was always one of the highlights among our various tours. As President of the Saskatchewan Greenhouse Growers Association, Fred also supported several of our research projects and we are very grateful. May your many fond memories bring you peace and may time ease the pain. Sincerely, Karen Tanino (Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan).

You have my deepest condolences Pat and family. I watched the livestream rather than attending in person. It was a lovely service. I admired and looked up to Fred during my time on the Saskatoon Farmers Market Board of Directors. We didn't always agree but I respected his opinion and viewpoints. In retrospect, he was probably more right than I was. I always appreciated when he would chair meetings as we would get stuff done and be home in time for dinner. He always made sure everyone had their say and would call an issue to a vote when we started repeating ourselves. I think the market lost a good ally and a steady influence. It'll be weird not having him around. I'll miss him. Take care.

My condolences go out to you Pat, and to Fred's other family and friends. While I never got to work directly with Fred, I ran into him many times over the years through work, as we both worked for Dave Billard and Rick Kusmirski. I always remember Fred as a kind man and an excellent geologist and always liked interacting with him.
Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict, I won't be able to attend the funeral in person, but wished to express my condolences.
With sympathy,
Christine McKechnie

I grew up 3 houses away from the Gittings and enjoyed spending a lot of time with Fred. I have so many memories. A cool Fort Elmer built in his back yard. Driving in Elmer's nice blue stationwagon which burned rubber! Freds green Buick and a trip to Grand Bend and also Cedar Point near Detroit and another one to Washington DC. Late night cruising in that Buick, trips to McDonalds on HWY10 south of the QEW for 21 cent cheeseburgers. Lots of guitar jams. And "Stage Crew" adventures at PCHS. The memories from these days are very special. A bit foggy, but special. I did not have a camera back then and don't have pictures. Kids these days will have lots of pictures to help them remember the formative years.
I wanted to get to Grandora but never had the chance. Many years ago Fred was lead geologist near LaLoche, he needed to telephone the data to Toronto. He arranged for me to get on a small plane here in Fort McMurray and fly to the camp. He got on the plane and came back to my place and used my telephone land line. I had a day ice fishing and touring and great camp food. The plane brought him back to camp and I jumped on and went home.
Fred was kind, friendly, smart and mischievous.
He is missed, but not forgotten.
Love Steve Auty

I will remember Fred for the following:
Telling him there is a flood in the greenhouse and he's excited and wants to take pictures.
or getting the "look" when I said "Ready Freddie" when wrapping - never said that again!
and finally, drinking his beer once, the next time hiding it
