Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Helen Margaret Derksen (nee Thiessen) passed irretrievably from our midst on February 22, leaving behind her a life abounding in love generously expressed, responsibly received, and conveyed with magnanimity, high intelligence, and a charisma that warmed the heart, even as she was trouncing you at Scrabble. She will not be missed. The word's too mild. What she will be is loved, as she loved, despite her absence, for as long as any of us are here.
Mom was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan on April 26, 1927, to Rev. J.J. and Katherine (Kornelsen) Thiessen. She grew up in Saskatoon, attended King Edward School and City Park Collegiate and later worked at the Royal Bank. She was a woman of strong faith, active in church life at Emmanuel Anglican Church, and earlier, at First Mennonite Church where she met her future husband, Mervin Derksen. Mom and Dad were married in 1951, a happy union lasting 50 years until Dad’s passing in 2001. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Merv, her parents J.J. and Katherine Thiessen, and siblings Jacob Thiessen, Hedie Loewen and Walter Thiessen. Mom is survived and deeply missed by her children Barb Montalbetti, Bob Derksen, Lynne (Mel) Braun, Kathy (Vic) Pankratz, David (Marlys) Derksen, her ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, by her sister Katherine Wiens, and other close family members and friends.
The Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home. For those unable to attend Helen's service will also be live-streamed.
Interment will happen at a later date.
