After a brief sojourn out of the country, and upon catching up on past obituaries, I was dismayed to read of Poppy's passing. She and my late Mother Jean Spurgeon were friends, and I had the pleasure of meeting Poppy and knowing her casually through my Mom.
My Mom Jean and Poppy and another friend Doreen Lusher (and also a lady named Sally?) would socialize regularly over drinks and dinner either at the annual Luther Care fundraising supper, or at a downtown pub, or even at Doreen's house. I believe they met through their love of Jazz as my Mom was heavily involved in the Saskatoon Jazz Society and The Bassment. My husband and I had the distinct pleasure of getting to meet Poppy and hearing wonderful stories during one of their gals' nights.
Poppy was a very kind and welcoming woman. Quiet as she was, she was always interested to see her friends and hear what they had been up to. My Mom Jean treasured Poppy's friendship immensely. Those ladies had so many laughs together! Poppy loved Persephone Theatre, and my Mom and I got to see her frequently during our own attendance at plays.
I spoke with Poppy over the phone the end of 2020 upon my Mom's passing, and Poppy was sharp as a tack and a treat to talk with.
My sincere condolences to all of you in the family, extended family, and close friends.
