Reta Shannon McCarthy
April 19, 1934 – November 3, 2015
It is with deep sadness that the family of Reta Shannon McCarthy announces her sudden passing on November 3, 2015. She leaves to mourn her daughters, Donna Metz (Ed Metz), and Karen Kallio, and her grandchildren Danielle Metz, Erin Metz, Tyler Kallio, Laura Kallio (Andrew Huculak) and Rachel Kallio (Bruce Wiebe). She was predeceased by mother Mary Parkinson (Funk), father Cyril Parkinson, step-mother Florence Parkinson (Henderson) and beloved husband of 52 years, Don McCarthy. Reta was lovingly surrounded by all her children and grandchildren in her last moments. Reta was born and raised in Kamsack SK. An only child, she grew up with her loving parents and extended family in her small town. In 1950 she moved to Saskatoon to attend university and soon completed her degree in nursing. Reta met her husband Don through a friend when they attended a dance together. Don and Reta would enjoy many dances over the years as it was a favourite pastime. Many of these dances took place at Danceland in Manitou Beach, SK., the place where Don and Reta would later build the treasured family cabin where many family and friends have and continue to enjoy time together. In 1957 Don and Reta were married and settled in Saskatoon where they raised their 2 girls. Through her nursing education, Reta began teaching Anatomy and Physiology in the Centralized Teaching Program and through her expertise was later recruited to develop the new nursing program at Kelsey Institute of Applied Arts and Science. Over the years Don and Reta enjoyed many summer vacations with their children. Many fond memories were also made through time spent with their group of friends, together for over 50 years. Grand New Year’s parties and weekly coffee times were tradition. Reta was a great lover of music. As well she enjoyed sewing and reading. Her greatest love was her family. She had lovingly prepared countless family meals over the years and continuously doted on her grandchildren. Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend will be remembered always and treasured in our hearts. It was Reta’s wish that there be no service. In leiu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation or charity of choice.
