For someone getting started in a complex English Department, Joan was a wonderful colleague. It always meant very much to me when our paths crossed in the mail room and there was an opportunity for conversation. With such deep, wide learning, Joan was a rare source of insight and advice. I remember her lively comments on the early poems of Dylan Thomas and her tremendously helpful advice about teaching the medieval romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. She cared about the books and she cared about the colleagues. My life was much the better for her kindness and the time she took to connect. In fond memory, David Parkinson
