Helen “Bubs” Coleman (nee Benger)
August 14, 1929 – October 29, 2015
Helen “Bubs” Coleman (nee Benger) died (October 28, 2015) at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon, SK, of pancreatic cancer just four months following diagnosis. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Leslie (Professor Emeritus, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Saskatchewan), her daughter Sheila Morgan (Kerry) of Saskatoon, son Geoffrey (Cathy) of Austin, Texas, grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, and Allison Morgan, her sister Lois Coo, Kingston, devoted furry companions Patti, Sampson and Guyot, and nieces and nephews. Bubs was born on August 14, 1929 to a pioneer family in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) ON. She graduated from Queen’s University (Hon. BA) in 1951, married fellow alumnus Les Coleman in 1952 and moved to the United States for his graduate studies and academic appointments before their return to Canada and the University of Saskatchewan in 1960. Bubs worked in both countries as a journalist, writer and editor until retirement in 1994 after almost twenty years as communications coordinator for Saskatoon’s Mendel Art Gallery. Her history of the gallery, Dreaming a Gallery, was published in 2015. Bubs was a lifelong community activist, dedicated volunteer, passionate Liberal, believer in the arts and the printed word, and devoted to her family and friends.
