MATSHES, Lorraine

April 2, 1928  -  September 18, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Lorraine Isobel Matshes on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Luther Special Care Home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the age of 93 years. Lorraine was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Matshes, parents William and Estella Holdner, her brothers Charles, Alfred, Harold, Leo, Raymond, Albert, and her sister Leona. Lorraine is survived by brother Willam Holdner (Jane) of Scappoose, Oregon, her son Ronald (Linda), her daughter Charlene (Richard), her grandsons Evan (Vivian) and Jason (Brigitte), her granddaughters Rhianna (Travis) and Chloe. Lorraine is also survived by seven great-grandchildren Parker, Bailey, Brooklyn, Amaya, Emerson, Arya, and Maeve. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Irene (Harold), Irene (Raymond) and many nephews and nieces. Lorraine was born on April 2, 1928, on the family farm in the Hills district, 20 miles south of Young, Saskatchewan. Lorraine expressed many fond memories growing up on the farm, with large family gatherings, and the smells of her mother’s cooking and baking. She had vivid memories of growing up doing her chores including carrying wood and coal, feeding the chickens, gathering eggs, and bringing in the cows from the pasture for milking. Lorraine attended Strawberry school near the farm and attended high school in The Pas, Manitoba and completed high school in Saskatoon graduating from Tech Collegiate in 1947. She completed a six-week teacher training course in the summer of 1948 and taught for two years in a one room school in the Mornimont School District near Watrous. Lorraine married Bill Matshes on October 17, 1948, and after a brief period they settled in Saskatoon. In the mid-1950’s Lorraine returned to teaching in the Saskatoon Public Elementary system. During this time, she studied very hard obtaining her B.A. and B.Ed. degrees. Her 34 years of teaching included working in several schools, Haultain, Prince Philip, John Lake, Queen Elizabeth, and Brevoort Park. After retiring in June 1988, Lorraine and Bill enjoyed golf for many summers at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club and in winters at Apache Junction, Arizona as snowbirds. She was passionate about clogging, square dancing, and billiards. Lorraine was a skilled seamstress sewing many of her own clothes and beautiful teddy bears for her grandchildren. She was a person of many skills and talents. After Bill’s passing in 1998, Lorraine continued a rich and active life with family and many friends. However, as the years progressed, Lorraine was diagnosed with dementia and was admitted to the Luther Special Care Home - Dementia unit in November 2010. The disease slowly advanced over the past 11 years denying her from her family. The family would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Luther Special Care Home for their excellent and loving care provided mom all those years. They were truly her second family. Lorraine was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, next to her husband in a private family service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Special thanks to the staff of Saskatoon Funeral Home for their excellent service. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to go to the LutherCare Foundation Saskatoon at https://luthercare.com/.
